Job Summary

Central Washington University is recruiting lab instruction for either the paramedicine program (EMS335/336/337 LAB) or EMT program (EMS250 LAB) to join our team. Depending on the position, this pool may consist of campus-based or remote locations. The salary, is dependent on experience and the position, plus the awesome CWU benefits.

The Role:

This position will facilitate lab instruction for either the paramedicine program (EMS335/336/337 LAB) or EMT program (EMS250 LAB). Lab instructors will help students both in practical skills and didactic knowledge A successful EMS lab instructor demonstrates professional attitude, knowledge, and character. These positions are designated as nonpermanent hourly positions.

Job Duties

Assists Program Director/lead instructor in teaching skills and didactic EMS knowledge.

EMT
- An EMT lab instructor will be responsible for following the plan as set out by the Program Director and/or lead instructor of the day. A lab instructor will work as the leader of a small group (5-6 students) and instruct on the days topic(s)/skill(s). This may include:

Medical and trauma patient assessment
Assessing multiple body systems including Cardiac, Pulmonary, Neurologic, Endocrine, Musculoskeletal, and others.
Scene management and leadership
Assessing the student's ability to lead others and manage a scene of up to 5 other medical providers and department personnel to coordinate patient care.
Compassionate communication
Assessing student's ability to communicate with patients and providing examples of proper communication.
Equipment usage
Instructs students in the use of stethoscopes, sphygmomanometers, glucometers, nasal cannulas, non-rebreather masks, oxygen tanks and regulators, pulse oximeters, automated external defibrillators, cardiac monitors and lead placement, bag-valve masks, suction devices, backboards, cervical collars, tourniquets, traction splints, vacuum splints, gurney use, manual stair chair use, occlusive dressings, supraglottic airway devices, trauma triage tags and other equipment as needed.
Provide written feedback.
Evaluates and provides actionable written feedback that the student can use to improve future scenarios.
Receives materials and supplies used in classes; assists Program Director/lead instructor in demonstration of tools, equipment, machinery, apparatus, and materials.
Modifies equipment, materials and programs as required for individual students; assists students and instructors in selecting correct tools and materials.
Help with cumulative evaluations; Midterm, final, and NREMT-B.
Maintains files on individual student's progress for presentation to the Program Director/lead instructor.

Paramedic
- A Paramedic lab instructor will be responsible for following the plan as set out by the Program Director and/or lead instructor of the day. A lab instructor will work as the leader of a small group (5-6 students) and instruct on the days topic(s)/skill(s). This may include:

Procedural knowledge
IV access, 12-lead EKG interpretation, intubation, cricothyrotomy.
Medication knowledge
Competent in the use and instruction of Adenosine, Albuterol, Amiodarone, Aspirin, Ativan, Atropine, Atrovent, Benadryl, Calcium Gluconate, Dexamethasone, Dextrose, Diltiazem, Dopamine, Epinephrine, Etomidate, Fentanyl, Glucagon, Ketamine, Levophed, Lidocaine, Magnesium, Morphine, Narcan, Nitroglycerin, Rocuronium, Sodium Bicarbonate, Solu-Medrol, Succinylcholine, Valium, Vecuronium, Versed, and Zofran.
Compassionate communication

Provide written feedback.

Minimum Qualifications

EMT

Maintain current employment as an EMT in Washington State.

Strong Knowledge of Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Pediatric Advanced Life Support.
Fundamental understanding of all Paramedic tools commensurate with certification.
Fundamental understanding of all Paramedic drugs commensurate with certification.
Ability to proctor scenarios and give written feedback to students.
Ability to impart leadership responsibilities and qualities into assessments of scenarios.
Demonstrated willingness and/or experience working with students and/or co-workers from a wide range of abilities, backgrounds and experiences.

Preferred Qualifications

EMT

1 year of working experience
Working actively in a primary 911 response system
AHA BLS CPR Instructor
Field Training Officer where employed.
Ability to incorporate multicultural perspectives and issues into everyday conversations.

Paramedic

Completed one 3-year recertification cycle of working experience.
Working actively in a primary 911 response system
AHA ACLS and PALS CPR Instructor
Handtev Certification
Field Training Officer where employed.

Pay & Work Schedule

Pay: Dependent on position, from $29.52 to $33.95 per hour.

Schedule/Hours: Sporadic dependent on departments needs.

Additional information: This announcement will be used to develop a pool of applicants for nonpermanent Paramedic Lab Instructor positions through September 30, 2026. Working Conditions: All instruction will take place in the Health Science Building in rooms 317, 318 and the Suite Training Rooms. At times, weather permitting, instruction may be lead outside, on campus.
