Function/Summary
This position will operate various WVU Parkersburg vehicles to transport passengers safely and courteously along fixed routes. The role includes performing customer service activities, inspecting transit vehicles, operating and monitoring onboard equipment, completing reports and forms, reporting incidents or events that may impact efficient transit operation, and assisting passengers who require exceptional help. When not performing driver duties or during periods outside of the academic semester, the incumbent may be assigned to other campus operational duties as directed by the supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
Experience
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience operating a motor vehicle with an unrestricted driver's license.
- Experience transporting passengers in a professional or institutional setting (preferred.)
Licensure & Certification
- A valid West Virginia Class C Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a Passenger (P) endorsement.
- A valid First Aid/CPR Certificate, or the ability to obtain one within the first 30 days of employment.
- Driving record must reflect a history of safe operation; candidates with excessive traffic citations or chargeable accidents may be disqualified.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Demonstrated safe and defensive driving practices and knowledge of applicable traffic laws.
- Ability to operate a passenger bus and maintain order among passengers efficiently and courteously.
- Knowledge of safety equipment, procedures, and maintenance requirements relating to bus and passenger transportation equipment.
- Proper methods and safe practices for loading and unloading passengers and cargo.
- Ability to perform physical labor, including safe lifting techniques for supplies and equipment.
- Basic first aid procedures and emergency response methods.
- Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy when interacting with students, faculty, and staff.
- Proficiency with two-way radio and telephone systems and proper communication etiquette.
- Accurate record-keeping and basic inventory management practices.
- Commitment to delivering excellent customer service in a higher-education environment.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Basic arithmetic skills for mileage, passenger counts, and related reporting.
- Familiarity with applicable computer software applications and programs.
Duties/Responsibilities
Passenger Transportation & Route Operations – 30%
- Operate passenger buses and other assigned WVU Parkersburg vehicles over designated routes and according to established schedules.
- Safely board and unload passengers at designated stops.
- Provide courteous, reliable, and timely service.
Passenger Assistance - Safety & Emergency Response – 20%
- Assist passengers with boarding, riding, and exiting vehicles, including passengers with disabilities or special needs.
- Operate accessibility equipment when applicable.
- Monitor the conduct of passengers during daily routes, special events, and field trips.
- Promote a safe, respectful, and orderly passenger environment at bus stops and on the vehicle.
- Respond appropriately to passenger illness, injury, accidents, emergencies, or unsafe conditions, including rendering first aid within the scope of training and contacting the supervisor, emergency services or campus security when appropriate.
Fleet Support - Cleaning & Basic Vehicle Care – 15%
- Support routine fleet operations by assisting with fleet vehicle readiness between routes or during scheduled downtime.
- Re-fueling fleet vehicles as needed.
- Clean and sanitize fleet vehicle interiors and exteriors
- Restocking supplies, securing materials and equipment as necessary.
Records, Reports & Documentation – 15%
- Maintain organized and accurate transportation records.
- Document passenger counts, departure and arrival times, mileage, and maintenance concerns.
- Complete inspection forms, trip logs, incident reports, and other required documentation in a manner consistent with required deadlines.
Vehicle Inspection - Safety Checks, Operational Readiness & Reporting – 10%
- Perform and document required pre-trip and post-trip inspections of assigned vehicles, including checks of safety equipment, lights, mirrors, tires, fluids, brakes, communication equipment, accessibility equipment, cleanliness, and overall operational readiness.
- Report vehicle defects, maintenance concerns, damage, safety hazards, passenger concerns, delays, accidents, weather-related disruptions, or other service interruptions to the supervisor or appropriate personnel in a timely manner.
Transportation Coordination & Special Assignments – 5%
- Provide event transportation for field trips and other approved campus or off-campus transportation assignments.
- Coordinate transportation activities with appropriate college personnel.
- Organize passenger boarding, unloading, vehicle staging, special transportation needs and route changes as necessary.
General – 5%
