Position Summary
The Staff Development / Infection Preventionist supports the Director of Nursing in the daily operations, oversight, and regulatory compliance of the nursing department. This position serves as a key nursing leadership role with primary responsibility for nurse scheduling, infection prevention and control, staff education support, nursing audits, and assisting the DON with department operations.
The SD/IP helps ensure quality resident care, appropriate staffing, regulatory compliance, and consistent nursing practices throughout the facility. This role requires strong organization, follow-through, leadership, communication, and the ability to support both frontline staff and nursing leadership.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Nursing Leadership and DON Support
- Assist the Director of Nursing with daily nursing department operations.
- Serve as a resource and support person for nurses, CNAs, and charge nurses.
- Help identify and resolve nursing workflow concerns.
- Assist with implementation of nursing policies, procedures, and department expectations.
- Support the DON with survey readiness, plans of correction, staff education, and follow-up monitoring.
- Participate in nursing leadership meetings, QAPI, infection control meetings, and other committees as assigned.
- Assist with investigations, staff follow-up, education, and corrective action as directed by the DON.
- Serve as DON designee when assigned or in the DON’s absence.
Staffing and Scheduling
- Prepare, maintain, and update the nursing department schedule.
- Monitor staffing levels to help ensure appropriate coverage for resident needs.
- Assist with filling call-ins, schedule changes, open shifts, and staffing concerns.
- Communicate staffing needs to the DON and appropriate leadership.
- Track patterns related to attendance, call-ins, tardiness, and scheduling concerns.
- Work with nursing leadership to support fair and consistent scheduling practices.
- Assist with agency staffing coordination when applicable.
- Help ensure staffing documentation is accurate and complete.
Infection Prevention and Control
- Serve as the facility Infection Preventionist.
- Monitor, track, and report infections according to facility policy and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain infection surveillance logs and related documentation.
- Track employee illness, exposures, and return-to-work requirements as assigned.
- Assist with vaccination, TB, respiratory protection, and other infection control-related tracking.
- Monitor infection prevention practices throughout the facility, including hand hygiene, PPE use, isolation precautions, cleaning/disinfection concerns, and outbreak response.
- Coordinate infection control education for staff as needed.
- Assist with antibiotic stewardship tracking and reporting.
- Prepare infection control data for QAPI and other required meetings.
- Assist in developing and implementing infection prevention interventions based on identified trends.
Audits, Education, and Compliance
- Complete nursing audits as assigned by the DON.
- Assist with monitoring compliance related to documentation, infection control, care practices, and nursing systems.
- Provide or coordinate staff education related to identified concerns.
- Assist with new nursing staff onboarding, competency checkoffs, and skills validation as assigned.
- Track follow-up related to audits, education, and corrective action plans.
- Support a culture of accountability, quality improvement, and resident-centered care.
Qualifications
- Current RN or LPN license in the State of Nebraska required.
- Long-term care or skilled nursing experience preferred.
- Previous nursing leadership experience preferred.
- Infection prevention experience preferred, or willingness to complete infection prevention training.
- Strong organizational and communication skills required.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and follow through on assigned responsibilities.
- Knowledge of nursing home regulations, infection prevention practices, and survey readiness preferred.
- Must demonstrate professionalism, confidentiality, sound judgment, and leadership.
Physical and Work Requirements
- Ability to work in a long-term care environment.
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, and lift as needed for resident care and department operations.
- Must be able to respond to resident, staff, and facility needs in a timely manner.
- May require occasional schedule flexibility based on facility needs.
Reporting Structure
- This position reports directly to the Director of Nursing.
Position Type
- Full-time, hourly position.
General Expectations
The Staff Development / Infection Preventionist is expected to be a dependable nursing leader who supports the DON, promotes regulatory compliance, helps maintain appropriate staffing, strengthens infection prevention practices, and contributes to a positive, accountable nursing department culture.
This position is intended to support nursing operations and regulatory compliance. Duties may be adjusted based on facility needs, resident needs, regulatory requirements, and direction from the Director of Nursing or Administrator.
