A Senior Auditor assigns, reviews, and evaluates the work of employees engaged in auditing financial records of contractors, City departments and other entities to determine the accuracy of revenue payments to City departments, to verify the status of nonprofit organizations, or to determine compliance with City, State and Federal laws, regulations and mandates; supervises the auditing of City departments to determine the accuracy of departmental accounts and adequacy of internal control and recommends necessary changes in systems and procedures; performs the more difficult audits; applies sound supervisory principles and techniques in building and maintaining an effective work group; and fulfills equal employment opportunity responsibilities.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Two years of full-time paid professional financial auditing experience in a position at the level of Auditor.
PROCESS NOTES
Applicants who lack six months or less of the required experience at the time of filing may file for this examination. However, they cannot be appointed until the full experience requirement has been met.
As a condition of employment, a valid Class C driver’s license issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is required at the time of appointment. Applicants will be disqualified or deemed ineligible for hire if their DMV record reflects three or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents, or a conviction of a major moving violation within the last 36 months in any state or jurisdiction. The City of Los Angeles reserves the right to issue a notice of disqualification or ineligibility at any time before a final job offer is extended.
For qualifying work experience, the term “professional experience” applies to positions that require possession of a degree from an accredited four-year college or university in order to obtain that position. Therefore, to be considered “professional,” qualifying experience must be gained in positions after obtaining a four-year degree.

Technical Exercise - Advisory
Interview - 100%
The examination will consist of an on-line advisory technical exercise and an interview. In the interview, the following competencies may be evaluated: Judgment and Decision Making; Analytical Ability; Attention to Detail; Self-Management; Supervision; Interpersonal Skills; Written Communication; Job Knowledge, including knowledge of: governmental accounting principles as they relate to appropriations, encumbrances, disbursements, and fund balances; cost accounting principles; the Standards for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing; Generally Accepted Auditing Standards; Standards for Auditing Governmental Organizations, Programs, Activities, and Foundations; auditing procedures; the financial structure and accounting system in the City of Los Angeles and proprietary departments; auditing data management computer programs, software and applications; the Single Audit Act of 1984 sufficient to comply with regulations; and other necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Prior to the interview, candidates will be required to complete an advisory technical exercise, which will consist of technical problems related to the duties and responsibilities of a Senior Auditor. This technical exercise material will not be separately scored but will be presented to the interview board for review and consideration, which may include discussion, in the overall evaluation of the candidate. Those who do not complete the advisory technical exercise will not be invited to the interview and will be considered to have failed the entire examination. To be considered complete, the advisory technical exercise must include a substantive response for each question or problem included in the advisory technical exercise for which a candidate is required to provide an answer. Please note that candidates must complete the advisory technical exercise and meet the minimum qualification as stated on this bulletin in order to be considered further in the examination process.
The advisory technical exercise will be administered on-line. Applicants invited to participate in the examination will receive an e-mail from the City of Los Angeles outlining the specific steps needed to complete the on-line advisory technical exercise. Applicants will be required to complete the on-line advisory technical exercise between MONDAY, AUGUST 17, 2026 and MONDAY, AUGUST 24, 2026. Applicants who fail to complete the advisory technical exercise as instructed may be disqualified.
Candidates will be notified later by e-mail of the date, time, and location of the interview, which may be held in Los Angeles or on-line. It is anticipated that interviews will begin during the period of MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 2026 to FRIDAY, OCTOBER 2, 2026.

A final average score of 70% or higher is required to be placed on the eligible list.
You must have received a regular appointment to a City position or be on a reserve list to file on a promotional basis.
Seniority credit at the rate of 0.25 of a point for each year of continuous classified City service will be added to the weighted test score for each candidate.
In accordance with Civil Service Rule, Sec. 4.24, review periods may be combined. Candidates in the examination process may file protests as provided in Sec. 4.20, 4.22, and 4.23 as applicable and within the required timeframe; however, the Personnel Department may respond to and resolve protests prior to the establishment of the eligible list.
If in accordance with the Rule of Three Whole Scores all candidates are eligible for appointment consideration, the examination will consist entirely of an evaluation of the candidates’ City employment applications by Personnel Department staff to ensure that the minimum requirement has been met.
