Responsible for estimating and evaluating project costs while assessing the complexity of each project and determining the cost of labor and materials
Technical Skills (Hard Skills)
· Blueprint & Schematic Reading: Proficiency in interpreting electrical drawings, floor plans, riser diagrams, and technical specifications to determine project scope. Ability to review drawings of other trades to identify electrical needs that may have been missed in the electrical documentation.
· National Electrical Code (NEC) Knowledge: Deep understanding of NFPA 70 and local regulations to ensure safety compliance and accurate material sizing.
· Material Take-Offs: Competence in breaking down complex plans into precise lists of conduit, wire, lighting fixtures, and specialized equipment.
· Labor Cost Estimation: The ability to calculate labor hours based on project complexity, installation methods, and on-site productivity.
· Electrical Expertise: Knowledge of commercial, industrial, and data center electrical
Digital & Software Proficiency
· Specialized Estimating Software: Mastery of industry-standard tools such as McCormick, Bluebeam, etc. for digital takeoffs, markups, and PDF editing.
· Practical experience using Procore, Autodesk Construction Cloud, SharePoint, Microsoft Teams, and other similar project management software.
· Proficiency in Excel:
· Basic Pivot tables
· Ability to import data from PDF schedules and indexes
· Comfortable making references across multiple sheets
· Knowledge of data validation techniques
· Ability to recognize when rows, columns, or sheets are hidden.
· Ability to lock cells and sheets as needed to maintain worksheet integrity
· Familiarity with various formulas such as UNIQUE(), MATCH(), IFS(), XLOOKUP(), TRIMRANGE(), SORT(), FILTER(), etc.
· Proficiency in Microsoft Word:
· Familiarity with basic text formatting.
· Basic knowledge of page layout formatting.
Soft & Analytical Skills
· Strong Mathematical Foundation: Proficiency in practical algebra and geometry used in quantity breakdowns, cost calculations, and code calculations.
· Attention to Detail: A strict focus on precision to avoid "scope gaps" or hidden costs that could lead to unprofitable bids.
· Negotiation & Interpersonal Skills: Building and maintaining relationships with vendors and subcontractors to secure competitive material pricing.
· Ability to plan and prioritize workload to meet strict bid deadlines, ensuring all estimate components are completed, reviewed, and submitted on time without risk of disqualification.
· Risk Assessment: Identifying potential project challenges and developing contingency plans in the initial bid.
· Clear and effective written communication skills to ensure smooth information flow between on-site and off-site team members.
Professional Qualifications
Electrical Experience Required!
·Education: Bachelor’s degree in construction management, construction technology, or a other relevant degree.
· Field Experience: Minimum 10 years of commercial/industrial electrical trade experience or other relevant industry experience
· Certifications: Credentials like the Certified Professional Estimator (CPE) through ASPE or NECA certifications can significantly boost credibility.
