Serious Fun After School is a non-profit organization that provides affordable arts enrichment and after school programming to NYC public schools in Queens, NY.
We Create Fun – We Are Kind – We Foster Excellence – We Believe In Balance
What You’ll Do
As a Music Instructor at Serious Fun, you will lead children in engaging, hands-on exploration of keyboard and music through interactive lessons, creative activities, and performance. You will help students build confidence, creativity, and self-expression while developing foundational skills in keyboard playing, note reading, rhythm, finger placement, and musical listening. Ensuring the emotional and physical well-being of each student during class and performances is a top priority. Through positive teaching styles and encouragement, you will guide and empower students as they develop musical confidence and a lifelong appreciation for music. You will develop quarterly lesson plans and will be supported by a Group Teacher during class time. The Enrichment Music Instructor is supervised onsite by the Site Supervisor and reports directly to the Enrichment Coordinator.
You will:
- Create engaging activities that foster the development of new musical skills in children while building on prior knowledge.
- Teach foundational keyboard techniques, including note reading, rhythm, finger placement, and simple songs, through developmentally appropriate instruction.
- Incorporate creative exercises and interactive activities that strengthen coordination, listening skills, fine motor development, and musical confidence.
- Ensure that classroom guidelines are fair, clear, and easy to understand.
- Design the physical layout of your class (within the space available) that best supports positive behavior.
- Confidently model positive behavioral management skills for the Group Teacher supporting you.
- Prepare students for an end-of-year performance where they can proudly showcase their musical growth and accomplishments.
- Ensure the safety and security of all participants while in your classroom and during transitions.
- Assist your Serious Fun colleagues in the smooth operation of the program, lending a helping hand when needed, especially during transitions.
- Complete 15 hours of professional development each calendar year, as well as attend all meetings, training workshops, and special events (maximum four (4) per quarter) as required.
- Complete background checks, fingerprints, medical, etc. as required by the New York State Office of Children and Family Services (NYS OCFS).
