Process Engineer – Clean Utilities & CIP
Location: Wilson, NC (Onsite)
Duration: Long-Term Contract
$65-80/hr
Position Summary
Our client is seeking a Process Engineer to support the startup, commissioning, qualification, optimization, and ongoing operation of clean utility and CIP systems at a new pharmaceutical manufacturing facility in Wilson, NC. This individual will play a key role in ensuring critical utility systems meet GMP requirements while supporting manufacturing readiness and long-term operational excellence.
The ideal candidate will have experience with pharmaceutical or biotechnology facilities and possess strong technical knowledge of clean utilities, water systems, clean steam, and Clean-in-Place (CIP) processes. Experience supporting large capital projects, facility startup activities, or new facility commissioning is highly preferred.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide engineering support for clean utility systems including Purified Water (PW), Water for Injection (WFI), Clean Steam, Process Gases, and related distribution systems.
- Support design review, startup, commissioning, qualification, and operational readiness activities for utility and CIP systems.
- Collaborate with project teams, equipment vendors, automation teams, validation groups, and manufacturing stakeholders to ensure successful system implementation.
- Analyze process and utility system performance and identify opportunities for optimization, reliability improvements, and operational efficiencies.
- Support development and review of engineering documentation including URS, P&IDs, SOPs, commissioning protocols, qualification documents, and change controls.
- Provide technical troubleshooting and root cause analysis for utility and CIP-related issues.
- Ensure systems remain compliant with GMP regulations, internal quality standards, and applicable industry requirements.
- Participate in capital project execution and support integration of new equipment and systems into manufacturing operations.
- Assist with risk assessments, investigations, deviations, CAPAs, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Partner with manufacturing, maintenance, quality, validation, and facilities teams to support production goals.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or related engineering discipline.
- 5+ years of engineering experience within pharmaceutical, biotech, biologics, medical device, or other highly regulated manufacturing environments.
- Hands-on experience supporting Clean-in-Place (CIP) systems.
- Experience with one or more clean utility systems including:
- Purified Water (PW)
- Water for Injection (WFI)
- Clean Steam
- Process Gases
- Utility Distribution Systems
- Strong understanding of GMP-regulated environments.
- Experience with technical investigations, change controls, and engineering documentation.
- Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting greenfield or brownfield facility startup projects.
- Experience with commissioning, qualification, and validation activities.
- Knowledge of ASME BPE standards and pharmaceutical utility design principles.
- Experience supporting biologics, sterile manufacturing, or pharmaceutical production facilities.
- Familiarity with DeltaV, Rockwell, Siemens, or other automated process control systems.
- Experience leading continuous improvement and operational excellence initiatives.
