Scope of Job
To perform manual work involving the custodial maintenance of buildings. Responsible for assisting the Building Attendant Foreman with supervisory responsibilities and for performing custodial maintenance and miscellaneous related services
Description of Duties
- Supervises and provides general cleaning in all restrooms a minimum of twice a day, including but not limited to restocking of all supplies, trash removal, disinfection of all high touch areas and spot mopping as needed.
- Spot cleans all common spaces such as hallways, lobbies, conference rooms, break rooms, study rooms, stairways, locker rooms including but not limited to general wipe down of furniture, restocking of supplies, trash removal and other functions as needed.
- Strips, waxes and polishes floors as scheduled to include deep cleaning and scrubbing floors and walls as needed. Move furniture as needed.
- Cleans and washes all storefront glass windows on a weekly basis as needed or per request.
- Supervises, monitors custodial supplies for evaluating proper levels.
- Picks up and disposes of material to be recycled.
- Identifies and makes routine maintenance calls, keeps records and prepares reports.
- Supervises and participates in the preparation of areas for meetings, events, seminars and other student, faculty and staff functions.
- Responsible for mentoring and training employees and delegating work assignments to ensure services are properly and timely completed.
- Assumes supervisory responsibilities in the absence of Supervisor/Foreman.
- Assists with implementing measures to improve production methods, equipment performance, quality of product, and working conditions to increase efficiency and quality of services offered by department.

- May be required to have flexible work schedule, to include but not limited to working evenings, weekends, Holidays and overtime for projects and/or events or emergencies.
- May be required to carry a two-way radio and must be available on an “On call” basis.
- Supervises and assists in inventory control and distributes requested material.
- Cleans, maintains, and services custodial equipment after every use.
- Participates in the scheduling of employees for all events.
- Supervises, monitors and evaluates equipment and schedules maintenance repairs accordingly.
- Supervises and completes assigned work orders during shift as directed.
- Participates and completes all mandatory or assigned trainings.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Supervision Received
General supervision with detailed instructions on special assignments.
Supervision Given
Occasionally supervises assigned custodial personnel.
Required Education
Completion of the 6th grade. Ability to read and write English well enough to comprehend Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) on cleansers, chemicals, and other containers, and to understand work orders, complete time cards, and receive oral and written work directions.
Preferred Education
High school graduation or equivalent.
Licenses/Certifications
As condition of employment this position requires the applicant to be authorized to operate a University-Owned Vehicle for Official University Business. Per University of Texas System Policy 157, applicants will be subject to a motor vehicle record check for their most recent thirty-six (36) month history. Out of State Drivers are required to submit a 36-month history MVR from their prior State of residence(s).
Required Experience
Three (3) years of experience as a building attendant or its equivalent.
Preferred Experience
Two (2) or more years experience as a Building Attendant II or its equivalent in a college or university.
Equipment
Knowledge of janitorial equipment and its care and maintenance requirements.
Working Conditions
Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Work schedule: commonly day shift with weekend or night work on occasion. Usual office building conditions. Some exposure to inclement weather when moving between buildings and emptying trash. May be exposed to other hazardous wastes, chemicals, and/or conditions. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley.

Must be physically able to perform all essential functions and duties of the job. Requires considerable stooping, bending, kneeling, walking, lifting, and carrying of heavy objects to perform job duties. Requires moving, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling of heavy furniture, equipment, trash cans, boxes, files, filing cabinets, and other objects weighing up to 50 lbs. when working alone and 100 lbs. with help. Must be able to climb step ladders and maintain balance to clean and wash windows and lighting.
