The Small Animal Internal Medicine Service is seeking a full-time Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) to join our specialty care team. Depending on qualifications and experience, candidates may be hired at the RVT II or RVT III level (more details below regarding the criteria for a RVT II or RVT III position).
This position provides technical, clinical, and procedural support for patients undergoing advanced diagnostic and therapeutic care within the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Responsibilities include specialty patient care, anesthesia and sedation support, advanced endoscopic and minimally invasive procedures, coordination of specialty services such as radioactive iodine (I-131) treatment, client communication, and support of daily clinical operations. The successful candidate will work closely with ACVIM board-cerfitified faculty clinicians, residents, veterinary students, and technical staff while contributing to the hospital's missions of patient care, teaching, and clinical excellence.
Candidates hired at the RVT III level will additionally serve as a technical resource within the service, providing mentorship, workflow coordination, advanced procedural support, and leadership in training, quality improvement, and specialty program operations.
Compensation:
- RVT II: $22.11 - $26.44/hour ($46k-$55k/year)
- RVT III: $26.44-$30.29/hour ($55k-$63k/year
- Signing bonus and/or relocation expenses may be available for eligible and successful candidates.
Essential Job Duties:
- Provide patient care and technical support for Small Animal Internal Medicine patients, including venipuncture, IV catheter placement, fluid administration, urinary catheterization, abdominocentesis, blood and fluid product administration, anesthesia monitoring, sedation support, and diagnostic sample collection and submission to support high-quality specialty patient care.
- Assist clinicians with specialized fiber-optic and minimally invasive procedures, including laparoscopy, endoscopy, bronchoscopy, rhinoscopy, and cystoscopy, while operating, maintaining, sterilizing, and troubleshooting delicate endoscopic and fiber-optic equipment essential to advanced diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
- Coordinate specialty procedure workflows by preparing equipment, procedure rooms, anesthesia support, patient documentation, and required supplies to ensure efficient scheduling, continuity of care, and timely completion of procedures within a high-volume referral hospital environment.
- Communicate professionally with clients regarding patient care, medication refills, appointment coordination, follow-up care, and hospital services while gathering patient histories, obtaining basic physical parameters, entering laboratory orders and charges, and assisting with patient intake and discharge processes.
- Perform specialized patient care and radiation safety support for feline patients undergoing I-131 hyperthyroid treatment, including maintaining required radiation certifications and dosimetry requirements, administering treatments and sedation support, monitoring hospitalized patients, maintaining treatment logs, and ensuring compliance with all radiation safety protocols and hospital standards.
- Maintain inventory and stock medical supplies, treatment materials, and exam room necessities throughout the hospital to support uninterrupted clinical operations, patient care activities, and compliance with safety standards.
- Maintain clean, organized, and functional clinical workspaces and treatment areas not supported by Animal Care Cleaning teams to support infection prevention, operational efficiency, patient safety, and a professional hospital environment.
- Provide hands-on instruction, guidance, and oversight to veterinary students, interns, hourly assistants, and newly hired technicians regarding technical procedures, patient care protocols, clinical workflows, and hospital standards while supporting the teaching mission of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital.
- Perform other related duties as assigned in support of patient care operations, hospital workflow, and teaching activities within the Veterinary Teaching Hospital.
Decision Making:
- Determine appropriate patient care techniques, catheter types and placement sites, anesthesia support needs, and procedural interventions based on patient condition, diagnostic requirements, anticipated treatment plans, and patient safety considerations within the Small Animal Internal Medicine service.
- Evaluate patient stability and procedural risk factors during diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to keep Clinician updated of patient status, aiding the Clinician to make the best patient care decisions.
- Select specialized endoscopic scopes, biopsy instruments, retrieval devices, balloons, graspers, and ancillary equipment based on patient size, disease process, procedural goals, and equipment limitations during advanced fiber-optic procedures.
- Prioritize and coordinate patient scheduling, procedure order, urgent case triage, and resource utilization based on clinician availability, anesthesia support, staffing coverage, patient acuity, and operational workflow needs within a high-volume specialty hospital environment.
- Assess the competency and technical performance of veterinary students participating in procedures and patient care tasks, determining when intervention, direct oversight, or escalation to Clinician is necessary to maintain patient safety and hospital standards.
Supervision:
- Employees hired at the RVT II level will not have formal supervisory responsibilities.
- Employees hired at the RVT III level may serve as a lead technical resource within the service, assisting with workflow coordination, technical training, mentorship, and support of specialty procedures and service operations.
Minimum Qualifications (Both RVT II and RVT III):
- High school diploma or GED.
- Credentialed as a Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) or Provisional Veterinary Technician (PVT) through the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA) by the time of hire.
- Certified through the Colorado Association of Certified Veterinary Technicians (CACVT) and registered with DORA in accordance with the Colorado Veterinary Practice Act (effective January 1, 2024).
- RVT II - One year of clinical experience in the veterinary health field.
- RVT III - Three years of clinicial experience in the veterinary health field.
Preferred Qualifications:
- VTS with the Academy of Internal Medicine Veterinary Technicians
- At least one year working as a veterinary technician.
- Associate’s degree in veterinary technology from an accredited institution.
- Experience in IV catheter placement, venipuncture, cystocentesis, endoscopy, teaching, computer skills, scheduling appointments, and answering client questions preferred but not mandatory.
