Senior Cake Decorator & Bakery Operations Lead Job Summary
Buttermilk Bakeshop is a busy neighborhood bakery with two Park Slope locations specializing in custom cakes, celebration cakes, cupcakes, cookies, pies, and pastries.
We are seeking an experienced cake decorator who can also serve as a hands-on operational lead across both bakery locations. A primary responsibility of this position is helping our two stores remain organized, connected, and consistent—regardless of which employees are working at either location.
This position combines high-volume cake decorating with customer service, order checking, production support, employee training, and reinforcement of established bakery procedures. The right candidate must be comfortable moving between locations and working wherever support is most needed.
This is not a desk position. Depending on the day, the employee may decorate custom and case cakes, assist customers during a busy retail shift, check upcoming orders, pack shipping orders, help with basic baking production, or serve as the operational point person at one of our stores.
Responsibilities
- Help maintain consistent quality, organization, and procedures across both Park Slope locations
- Work at either bakery location according to daily production and staffing needs
- Serve as a reliable operational point person during busy retail shifts, particularly on Saturdays
- Help keep production, customer pickups, and daily store operations on track
- Answer routine employee questions and reinforce established bakery procedures
- Train employees and demonstrate the correct way to complete assigned tasks
- Help organize immediate workflow priorities when business needs change
- Communicate staffing, performance, customer-service, and operational concerns directly to the owners
- Build, fill, crumb-coat, ice, and finish cakes from start to finish
- Produce straightforward case cakes quickly, neatly, and consistently
- Complete custom and tiered cakes according to written order specifications
- Perform basic fondant work, including clean fondant application and simple decorative details
- Prepare buttercream, fillings, and other cake-decorating components
- Check upcoming and completed orders for accuracy, quality, stability, and presentation
- Assist with basic baking production, including cookies and other items, when coverage is needed
- Pack and quality-check Goldbelly and other shipping orders
- Assist customers in person and over the phone
- Take orders, explain standard products and pricing, work the register, and hand off pickups
- Respond to routine customer emails using established bakery policies and pricing
- Monitor inventory and communicate supply or production needs
- Reinforce standards for customer service, order handling, cleanliness, organization, and product quality
- Open or close either bakery location when scheduled
- Maintain a clean, sanitary, organized, and food-safe work environment
Qualifications
- Three or more years of professional cake-decorating experience preferred
- Professional experience with buttercream, fondant, custom cakes, and tiered cakes
- Ability to work quickly and accurately in a high-volume bakery
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow written cake orders
- Comfortable producing a high volume of simple case cakes while maintaining consistent quality
- Experience assisting customers, answering phones, taking orders, and working a register
- Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to train coworkers and reinforce established procedures professionally
- Willingness to switch between decorating, baking, packing, retail, and production support
- Dependable, punctual, calm under pressure, and comfortable taking initiative
- Comfortable using email and learning our ordering, pricing, and point-of-sale systems
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and remain on your feet throughout a shift
- New York City Food Protection Certificate preferred, or willingness to obtain one
Pay: $24.00 - $29.00 per hour
