Role: Prep Cook
Location: New York City (One Fifth)
Reports to: Executive Chef, Sous Chefs
Position Summary
The Prep Cook is a key part of Golden Steer NYC’s culinary team, responsible for executing daily mise en place with precision, consistency, and urgency. You’ll support the kitchen by preparing ingredients to exact specifications, ensuring every station is set up for success. With strong knife skills, organization, and attention to detail, you will help deliver the classic steakhouse experience our guests expect.
Key Responsibilities
- Mise en Place Execution: Prepare vegetables, proteins, sauces, and garnishes according to recipes and prep lists.
- Knife Work & Basic Fabrication: Peel, trim, slice, and portion ingredients with accuracy and consistency.
- Station Readiness: Ensure all prep items are labeled, stored, and ready for service.
- Quality Control: Maintain high standards for freshness, appearance, and consistency.
- Food Safety: Follow all sanitation, labeling, and storage procedures.
- Organization: Keep prep stations clean, stocked, and well-organized throughout the shift.
- Team Support: Work closely with chefs and line cooks to support smooth and efficient service.

Experience & Qualifications (Must-Haves)
- Minimum 2 years of prep cook experience in a high-volume restaurant
- Strong knife skills and basic culinary techniques
- Ability to follow recipes and prep lists with precision
- Understanding of food safety, storage, and sanitation standards
- NYC Food Protection Certificate preferred
- English required; Spanish a plus
Operations & Compliance
- Follow NYC DOH sanitation standards and internal procedures
- Maintain proper labeling, storage, and rotation of all ingredients
- Execute safe food handling practices at all times
Teamwork & Culture
- Arrive prepared and ready to contribute
- Communicate clearly with chefs and teammates
- Support training and onboarding of new prep team members
- Represent Golden Steer with professionalism and pride
Physical & Scheduling Requirements
- Stand, bend, and move quickly for 8–10 hours
- Lift and carry up to 50 lbs
- Comfortable working in fast-paced kitchen environments
- Nights, weekends, and holidays required
Compensation & Benefits
Hourly rate plus benefits and growth opportunities within a chef-driven, classic steakhouse culture.

Compensation: Hourly ($19.00 - $21.00)
