We are seeking a dedicated Peer Recovery Specialist to provide essential support and outreach to individuals transitioning from the Virginia Beach Correctional Center (VBCC) back into the community. In this role, you will leverage your own lived experience to act as a mentor, advocate, and guide, helping clients regain control of their lives and navigate the recovery process.
You will serve as a bridge between incarceration and community reintegration, ensuring clients are linked to vital resources and empowered to meet their personal treatment goals.
Schedule: Monday – Friday | 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM
Key Responsibilities

Reentry Support: Meet with individuals within the VBCC to contribute to recovery plans; accompany clients to appointments on the day of release to ensure a smooth transition.

Engagement: Conduct face-to-face follow-ups with consumers within five business days of their release.

Recovery Planning: Assist clients in developing Wellness Recovery Action Plans (WRAP) through both one-on-one and group sessions.

Resource Navigation: Educate and link consumers to community resources including housing, employment, transportation, and healthcare.

Advocacy: Attend integrated treatment team meetings to support the consumer’s voice; use personal experience to model competency in recovery and coping skills.

Communication Bridge: Guide consumers in effectively communicating their needs and circumstances to mental health and substance use professionals.
Qualifications & Requirements

Lived Experience: Must have personal lived experience with substance use or mental health disorders.

Education: High School Diploma or GED required; a bachelor’s degree in human services or a related field is a plus.

Certification: Virginia registration as a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS) is preferred. If not certified, you must be willing to complete CPRS training upon hire.

Driving Record: Must maintain an acceptable driving record.

Background & Screening: Must pass a comprehensive background check and drug screening.
Specific Background Clearance Criteria:

No felony convictions involving violence or larceny within the last 10 years.

No other felony convictions within the last 5 years.
