If you're an experienced manual machinist who enjoys running engine lathes, mills, grinders, and building tooling—not sitting behind a CNC control all day—we'd like to meet you.
General Pipe Cleaners, a division of the fourth-generation, family-owned General Wire Spring Company (founded in 1930), designs and manufactures professional drain cleaning equipment, springs, and wire forms that are sold throughout the world.
Unlike many manufacturers, manual machining remains at the heart of what we do. While our shop has a small number of CNC machines, this position is focused primarily on traditional manual machining. If you learned your trade the old-school way and take pride in precision craftsmanship, you'll find a shop where those skills are respected, used every day, and passed on to the next generation of machinists. What You'll Do
● Set up, adjust, and operate manual machine tools, including: engine lathes, milling machines, surface grinders, drill presses, OBI presses, tubing benders.
● Machine production parts, tooling, and repair components from blueprints, work orders, and engineering drawings.
● Build new production tooling and manufacture replacement machine components.
● Read blueprints and determine dimensions, tolerances, machining methods, and tooling requirements.
● Calculate feeds, speeds, dimensions, and tolerances using shop mathematics.
● Select appropriate tooling, fixtures, materials, and machining methods.
● Measure and inspect finished parts using micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, and digital readouts (DROs).
● Work with Engineering to improve tooling and manufacturing processes.
● Assist with maintenance and repair of production equipment.
● Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
Qualifications
Required
● High school diploma or GED.
● Three to five years (or more) of professional manual machining experience.
● Strong blueprint reading and layout skills.
● Working knowledge of machining practices, metal properties, shop mathematics, and precision measuring instruments.
● Basic knowledge of hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical systems.
● Ability to work independently while consistently producing high-quality work.
Preferred
● Associate degree in Machine Tool Technology or a related field.
● Completion of a machinist apprenticeship program.
● Experience building production tooling.
● Experience maintaining and repairing manufacturing equipment.
Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience will be considered.
Compensation & Benefits
Current Hourly Wage
$25.82 to $27.11 per hour. Placement within the current wage scale is based on demonstrated skills, knowledge, and ability under the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
● Weekly pay
● Full-time daylight schedule (Monday through Friday)
● Overtime opportunities available
Probationary Period
New employees are considered probationary for their first 2,080 worked hours (approximately one year of full-time employment).
During the probationary period, you'll receive:
● Thirteen paid holidays each year (including your birthday)
● Paid sick leave as provided under the Allegheny County Paid Sick Days Act
After successfully completing the probationary period, you'll become eligible for:

Physical Requirements
● Lift up to 50 pounds.
● Stand, walk, bend, stoop, and perform repetitive tasks throughout the workday.
● Excellent manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
● Good close vision for precision machining and inspection.
