Butterfield Park District is seeking a hands-on Grounds & Parks Maintenance Mechanic to maintain the District's parks, athletic fields, playgrounds, courts, and grounds equipment and vehicle fleet. This is a working, hands-on role. You will be the person actually keeping our parks in top shape, not managing others to do it. Experience maintaining public lands, recreational facilities, or commercial grounds — including federal, state, or municipal parks experience is strongly valued.
Essential Duties:
- Mow, edge, and maintain turf and athletic fields across all District properties coordinate outside lawn service support as needed.
- Perform routine weeding, edging, and bed maintenance across District grounds and plantings, coordinating with the Horticultural Consultant's seasonal care plan as applicable.
- Execute seasonal planting and turf care plans developed in consultation with the District's Horticultural Consultant.
- Trim and maintain shrubs, hedges, and low-lying tree branches to keep sightlines, pathways, and play areas clear and safe.
- Respond to storm damage by clearing fallen limbs and storm debris from parks, pathways, and grounds, and coordinate outside tree service support for larger removals as needed.
- Conduct routine visual inspection of trees near high-traffic areas (playgrounds, pathways, pool, pavilions, parking) for hazards such as dead limbs or storm damage, and report concerns for further evaluation.
- Maintain tennis and pickleball courts: nets, fencing, surface cleaning, minor crack sealing; coordinate outside contractors for major resurfacing.
- Inspect and maintain playground equipment for safety compliance.
- Maintain, service, and repair grounds equipment, mowers, tractors, utility vehicles, and District trucks used in grounds operations — routine maintenance (fluids, tires, filters, blades) performed in-house; coordinate outside repair for major mechanical work.
- Operate snow/ice removal equipment during winter months.
- Assist with event setup/breakdown, and support facility readiness for District programs and rentals.
Required Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid Illinois driver's license.
- Ability to pass a physical examination confirming fitness for duties (District policy).
- Demonstrated hands-on experience with grounds equipment operation and basic mechanical maintenance.
Certifications (required or to be obtained within 90 days, District-supported):
- Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI)
- Basic chain saw safety course
- First Aid/CPR/AED
Status: Full-time Exempt
Compensation: $58,000 annually, commensurate with experience and certifications held

This position offers a defined path for growth within the District's Parks & Facilities team, including opportunities to cross train in facilities/aquatic systems, pursue additional certifications (fully supported by the District), and advance toward a lead or supervisory maintenance role as the department grows.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, and climb. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds with assistance or proper equipment. Employee may be subject to prolonged standing, repetitive lifting, stooping, bending, twisting, kneeling, and climbing (including ladders) for extended periods.
Employee may use hands for repetitive:
Single Grasping (tools, equipment operation) and Fine Manipulation (small parts, wiring, controls).
Psychological Considerations:
Work independently with minimal daily/direct supervision; collaborate with facility/grounds staff and outside contractors; interpret and follow safety protocols and manufacturer specifications.
Environmental Considerations
Work is performed primarily outdoors, with regular exposure to equipment noise, dust, pesticides/herbicides, and all aspects of weather conditions including extreme heat and cold, rain, and snow. Some indoor work occurs in a recreation center/maintenance setting with exposure to noise and dust.
Cognitive Considerations:
Must exhibit sound judgment in diagnosing and repairing mechanical, electrical, and chemical systems; follow safety codes and manufacturer specifications precisely; respond calmly and effectively to facility emergencies.
