First and foremost--you HAVE to be available to work on certain week-day afternoons after school. The very best candidates love kids first, and love sports second, and will have experience coaching or teaching kids.
if you have familiarity or experience playing or coaching other sports, too (other than football) such as basketball, soccer, pickleball street hockey, and other playground favorites--that is GREATLY preferred, and experience working with students across various age groups is a huge plus.
Duties:
- Develop simple outlines for each after-school sports session you present
- Instruct kids from K thru 9th grade on all the sub-skills of flag football or other sports--both for beginners, as well as kids who have good experience in the sport
- Keep students engaged and energized and engaged as you teach/coach them while they have a TON of fun, after school. There are typically 4 steps to our process: 1) a fun warm-up game for the kids 2) present a skill or two related to flag football (or the sport you are presenting) 3) come up with some fun games for the kids to play which reinforce the skill(s) you just demonstrated 4) At OTA we ALWAYS reserve the last half of the program hour to simply PLAY THE GAME. In this case, you are the referee/coach, and you enthusiastically interact with the kids as they just play the sport-however imperfectly they do it!
-Punctuality--you must arrive 15 minutes prior to program start and remain until 15 minutes after program ends. Because of this, it is absolutely required that you have reliable transportation.
--Professionalism--wear the OTA Coach's shirt and whistle, and have a neat appearance; showing respect to administration, teachers and students alike, and being fully prepared for every session before you walk onto the playing surface
- Create a positive and engaging sports-learning environment to help kids play the sports more skillfully
- Monitor student progress and adjust teaching methods accordingly
Skills:
- A general knowledge of football, and the ability to teach flag football; also having a basics familiarity with other common kids' team sports, is a HUGE plus
--A knack for relating to kids in various age groups (Elementary, Middle, Junior High)
- Strong communication skills to effectively convey rules and skills drills needed to more competently play a sport they may not have ever played before
- Aptitude and an interest to learn a variety of basic kids' team sports
- Ability to adapt teaching techniques to meet all the kids EXACTLY "where they are"
-Ability to set the rules and enforce them with sometimes distracted kids, being firm, but fun

If you are passionate about kids & sports and making a positive impact on young kids after school and on weekends in your communities, and if you feel you can coach young kids on flag football and other sports, we sure would LOVE to hear from you!
