A furniture, appliance, and liquidation retail operation in Dubuque, Iowa is hiring a General Manager to lead its high-volume store and help build the operational foundation for regional expansion. The business specializes in overstock, closeout, scratch-and-dent, customer return, and truckload inventory across furniture, appliances, and home improvement categories. This is a hands-on leadership role for a proven retail operator who can run a complex operation today while contributing to the systems and infrastructure needed to support multiple future locations.
Schedule
Full-time, on-site in Dubuque. Retail hours with flexibility required based on operational needs and event scheduling.
Compensation
$90,000 to $150,000 base salary per year, plus a performance bonus program tied to store results. Relocation assistance is available for qualified candidates moving to the Dubuque area.
You will have full operational ownership of the store, overseeing sales, warehouse, inventory, staffing, and merchandising under one leadership umbrella. On the sales side, you will recruit, train, and develop a commission-based sales team, running daily sales meetings, monitoring close rates and average ticket performance, and holding team members accountable to both revenue goals and customer experience standards.
Operationally, you will manage day-to-day store and warehouse functions, build and refine the systems and procedures the business runs on, and track key performance metrics across profitability, inventory turns, and team productivity. Inventory management is a core part of the role, including overseeing truckload receiving, processing, pricing, and merchandising from arrival through final sale, while maintaining a well-organized, high-conversion showroom floor.
You will also partner with ownership and the marketing team on traffic generation, promotional events, community outreach, and customer follow-up and referral programs. As the business grows, you will play an active role in building the scalable infrastructure needed for future store openings, contributing to strategic planning and participating in expansion projects as they develop.
- Minimum 3 years of leadership experience in furniture, appliance, mattress, outlet, liquidation, overstock, or closeout retail
- Proven experience managing commission-based sales teams
- Experience receiving, processing, and managing large truckload inventory shipments
- Demonstrated ability to build operational systems and improve store processes
- Strong leadership, coaching, and accountability skills
- Experience managing or opening multiple retail locations
- Background in high-volume liquidation or truckload retail specifically
- Familiarity with inventory management systems used in outlet or closeout retail environments
- Track record of improving inventory turn rates and showroom conversion
- Experience partnering with ownership or executive leadership on growth strategy
