Deputy Prosecuting Attorney:
The Department of the Prosecuting Attorney, City and County of Honolulu, is hiring Deputy Prosecuting Attorneys at all experience levels, as well as Law Clerks who are planning to take the bar exam or are awaiting their results.
Law Clerk to Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Pathway:
If you're hired as a Law Clerk, you're essentially hired as a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney. The Department is simply waiting for you to pass the bar exam, at which point you'll be immediately promoted into the Deputy Prosecuting Attorney role.
Employment as a Law Clerk is contingent upon receiving a Juris Doctor degree from an ABA accredited law school. Those in their final year of law school are encouraged to apply, as they may receive an official job offer before the end of their school year.
*Reciprocity for Out-of-State Attorneys:
Reciprocity for attorneys licensed in other jurisdictions is now available under the Limited License Method for Public Employee (Criminal Law) section of Rule 1 of the Rules of the Supreme Court of Hawaii. Reciprocity will be granted to attorneys admitted to practice by the highest court of another state, the District of Columbia, or a territory of the United States, and whose license to practice in that jurisdiction is active, who is a graduate of a law school approved by the American Bar Association Council on Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar, and who is in good standing in every jurisdiction where the attorney is licensed. If you're not yet admitted to practice law in Hawaii or another state, that's not a problem. If you're planning to take the bar exam or are awaiting your results, we can hire you as a Law Clerk in the meantime, and you'll be immediately promoted to Deputy Prosecuting Attorney upon passing the bar.
Salary:
The current salary for the Law Clerk position is $78,756.00/annually, and it is set to increase annually. You will receive full-benefits as a Law Clerk.
As a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney with the Department, you'll receive regular annual pay increases, additional pay increases as you progress through various areas of criminal law, and pay increases for years of service in the Department. You will also be able to pursue promotional opportunities to become a Team Captain or Division Chief for the Department.
Deputy Prosecuting Attorneys' salaries currently start at $103,032/annually, and it is set to increase annually. For candidates with criminal law experience, salary can be adjusted to be commensurate with that experience.
