The York County Public Defender’s Office is seeking qualified applicants for Deputy Public Defender.
Dedicated and mission-driven attorney who will provide high-quality legal representation to indigent clients charged with misdemeanor and felony offenses or facing mental health proceedings.
- Investigate, prepare and defend misdemeanor and felony cases with supervision; assists Public Defender in preparing and defending felony criminal cases and Appellate Court cases, as assigned.
- Represent clients in court proceedings, including arraignments, probation, preliminary and pretrial hearings, trials, sentencing, appeals, mental health proceedings and related matters.
- Conduct thorough legal research, analyze case law, develop strategies, and prepare all necessary legal documents.
- Interview defendants, victims, witnesses, law enforcement officers, and other involved parties.
- Prepare, file, and argue motions on behalf of clients.
- Negotiate with prosecutors at all stages of a case to secure favorable outcomes for clients.
- Communicate effectively with county attorneys, judges, probation officers, court staff, and others in furtherance of client representation.
- Assert clear and timely communication with clients, ensuring they understand their rights, case status, and available options.
- Maintain strict confidentiality and uphold professional and ethical standards in all aspects of legal practice.
- Graduation from accredited law school and admission to the Nebraska State Bar
- Experience as a practicing attorney preferred. Recent graduates are encouraged to apply. Must be licensed to practice law in the State of Nebraska at the beginning of employment
- Strong client counseling and time-management skills
- Knowledge of judicial procedures and of the rules of evidence and Court rules.
- Ability to prepare, present and argue cases in Court and assist more experienced attorneys in the same activities.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, the public, coworkers, and justice system personnel.
- Clear, precise written and oral communication.
- Strong time‑management skills and the ability to work under deadlines.
- Ability to manage a caseload, meet deadlines, handle sensitive matters with professionalism, and work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Salary range $65,000-$85,000 commensurate with experience and ability
