Overview
General Extrusions International, LLC is seeking a Controls Engineer to support and improve the electrical and automation systems throughout our manufacturing operations. This position will focus on PLC-controlled equipment, industrial automation, troubleshooting, equipment upgrades, and improving the reliability of our production systems.
The Controls Engineer will work closely with Maintenance, Engineering, and Production to troubleshoot equipment issues, identify root causes, improve existing controls, and support new equipment and capital projects.
Responsibilities
- Troubleshoot PLC, HMI, VFD, servo, and industrial control system issues.
- Program, modify, and troubleshoot Allen-Bradley PLC systems using Studio 5000 and RSLogix.
- Troubleshoot and modify HMI applications.
- Diagnose electrical and controls-related equipment failures and determine root cause.
- Support Allen-Bradley CompactLogix and ControlLogix systems as well as legacy equipment.
- Troubleshoot industrial communication networks, remote I/O, sensors, encoders, and other automation devices.
- Support servo motors, drives, motion-control systems, and automated equipment.
- Assist Maintenance with complex electrical and automation troubleshooting.
- Develop improvements to reduce equipment downtime and recurring failures.
- Support controls upgrades and modernization of older equipment.
- Assist with PLC, HMI, drive, and controls integration for new equipment and capital projects.
- Create and maintain electrical drawings, PLC documentation, backups, and controls documentation.
- Work with OEMs, integrators, contractors, and equipment manufacturers when necessary.
- Participate in equipment commissioning, startup, testing, and troubleshooting.
- Identify opportunities to improve machine reliability, safety, efficiency, and maintainability.
- Provide technical support and training to maintenance personnel.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Automation, Controls Engineering, or a related field preferred. Equivalent industrial controls experience will also be considered.
- Strong experience troubleshooting industrial electrical and automation systems.
- Experience with Allen-Bradley PLCs and Rockwell Automation software.
- Experience with Studio 5000 / RSLogix 5000.
- Working knowledge of industrial HMIs, VFDs, servo systems, sensors, and instrumentation.
- Ability to read and troubleshoot electrical schematics and control drawings.
- Understanding of 24VDC, 120VAC, and 480VAC industrial electrical systems.
- Understanding of industrial Ethernet and communication networks.
- Ability to troubleshoot equipment systematically and determine root causes rather than simply replacing components.
- Experience in a manufacturing environment strongly preferred.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE
Experience in any of the following areas is a plus:
- Aluminum extrusion or other heavy industrial manufacturing
- Hydraulic and pneumatic systems
- Extrusion presses and related material-handling equipment
- Furnaces, ovens, billet heaters, and temperature-control systems
- FANUC or other industrial robotics
- Ethernet/IP and industrial networking
- Servo and motion-control applications
- PanelView HMIs
- Control panel design and electrical system upgrades
- Legacy PLC migrations and equipment modernization
- Machine safety systems and Lockout/Tagout
We are looking for someone who is comfortable working directly with equipment and solving problems on the plant floor. The right candidate should be able to take an intermittent or recurring equipment problem, work through the electrical and controls systems, determine the actual cause, and develop a reliable long-term solution.
This position is a good fit for an engineer who enjoys hands-on troubleshooting and wants the opportunity to make meaningful improvements to manufacturing equipment rather than spending the majority of their time behind a desk.
