Position Summary
Athenian Academy seeks a knowledgeable, engaging, and dedicated Social Studies Teacher to deliver rigorous, standards-aligned instruction to middle school students for grades 6, 7 and 8. The ideal candidate brings content expertise, a student-centered instructional philosophy, and the ability to connect historical and civic concepts to students' lives. This position plays a key role in shaping students' understanding of history, geography, civics, and economics within a collaborative and academically focused school environment.
Key Responsibilities
Instruction & Curriculum
- Deliver engaging, Florida B.E.S.T. Standards-aligned Social Studies instruction across assigned grade levels (e.g., World History, U.S. History and Civics)
- Design and implement lesson plans that incorporate primary sources, inquiry-based learning, Socratic discussion, and differentiated strategies
- Integrate literacy skills—reading informational text, evidence-based writing, and academic vocabulary—into daily instruction
- Prepare students for Florida statewide assessments, including the Civics EOC where applicable
Assessment & Data Use
- Use formative and summative assessments to monitor student mastery and adjust instruction accordingly
- Analyze assessment data to identify learning gaps and provide targeted intervention or enrichment
- Maintain accurate, up-to-date grade and attendance records in the school's student information system
Classroom Environment
- Establish and maintain a structured, respectful, and inclusive classroom that supports all learners
- Implement school-wide PBIS expectations and behavior management practices consistently
- Create a classroom culture that promotes curiosity, critical thinking, and civic responsibility
Collaboration & Professional Growth
- Collaborate with grade-level and content-area teams to align curriculum, share best practices, and support student success
- Participate actively in professional development, PLCs, and school improvement initiatives
- Communicate proactively with families regarding student progress, concerns, and classroom expectations
- Contribute to a positive, mission-driven school culture aligned with Athenian Academy's values
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university
- Valid Florida Educator Certificate (or eligibility) in Social Science Education (Grades 5–12) or a related certification area
- Demonstrated knowledge of middle school Social Studies content and Florida B.E.S.T. Standards
- Strong classroom management skills and the ability to build positive relationships with middle school students
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
Preferred
- Prior middle school teaching experience in Social Studies
- Experience teaching Civics, including familiarity with the Florida Civics End-of-Course Assessment
- Familiarity with PBIS frameworks and restorative practices
- Experience with data-driven instruction and PLCs
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus
Florida Certification & Compliance Requirements
- Must hold or be actively pursuing a valid Florida Educator Certificate in the appropriate subject area
- Subject to Level 2 background screening pursuant to Florida Statutes §§ 1012.32 and 435.04
- Must meet all requirements of Florida Statutes Chapter 1012 (Personnel) and any applicable Pinellas County School Board requirements
- First Aid/CPR certification required within 90 days of hire or as directed by school administration
The position requires the ability to stand, walk, and move throughout the school building and campus for extended periods; supervise students indoors and outdoors; and occasionally lift or carry materials up to 25 pounds.
