1. Job Title: Special Equipment Operator
Licenses Required: MA Class B CDL, MA Hoisting Licenses 1C, 2A, 3A, 4E, and 4G.
Hourly Pay Range With All Required Licenses: $27.63 - $33.50
Initial Union Hiring Rate: $27.63
2. Job Title: Highway Laborer
Minimum License: MA Class D Driver’s License.
Hourly Pay Range Without All Required Licenses: $26.25 - $31.94
Initial Union Hiring Rate: $26.25
Summary
Are you skilled in operating heavy equipment and passionate about keeping your community running safely and efficiently? The Town of Shrewsbury’s Highway Division is seeking a motivated and reliable Special Equipment Operator to join our dedicated Public Works team!
As a Special Equipment Operator, you’ll perform a variety of hands-on tasks that keep Shrewsbury’s roads, sidewalks, and drainage systems in top condition. From operating loaders, backhoes, dump trucks, and sweepers to repairing catch basins and clearing storm drains, every day offers new challenges and opportunities to make a difference in your town.
What You’ll Do
Operate and maintain heavy equipment such as front-end loaders, backhoes, street sweepers, snowplows, and other machinery used in highway maintenance and construction.

Perform road repairs, drainage installation, tree work, and storm cleanup.

Inspect and maintain vehicles and equipment, ensuring they are safe and ready to use.

Respond to public works and weather emergencies, including snow and ice operations.

Work collaboratively with contractors, residents, and other departments to complete public projects efficiently.
What We’re Looking For
High school diploma or equivalent.

Massachusetts Class D Driver's License, for Equipment Operator & Laborer positions

Massachusetts Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), for Equipment Operator

Massachusetts Hoisting Engineer’s License: 1C, 2A, 4E, 4G, for Equipment Operator
OSHA 10 Certification.
Experience in public works, construction, or heavy equipment operation preferred.
Strong knowledge of roadway maintenance and construction safety standards.
Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and respond to emergency calls as needed.

Compensation, Work Hours & Benefits
This is a full-time, benefitted position within the Town’s Department of Public Works. Salary and benefits are competitive and commensurate with experience & licensure in accordance with union agreements and Town policies.
The hours are conveniently 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM Monday through Friday, with overtime as required. A daily 30-minute lunch as agreed upon by the Highway Supervisor.
