A nationally established heavy civil contractor is seeking an experienced Safety Manager to support major infrastructure projects across the Chicago area.
The company delivers complex highway, bridge, tollway, rail, utility, drainage, and flood-control projects for leading public-sector clients. The Safety Manager will work closely with project leadership and field teams to reduce risk, maintain regulatory compliance, and promote a proactive safety culture.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement project-specific safety plans and procedures.
- Conduct jobsite inspections, audits, and hazard assessments.
- Monitor excavation, utilities, concrete, structural work, traffic control, crane operations, and other heavy civil activities.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, client requirements, and company policies.
- Lead orientations, toolbox talks, pre-task planning, and safety training.
- Review job hazard analyses, lift plans, excavation plans, and other high-risk work documentation.
- Investigate incidents and near misses, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions.
- Maintain safety records, reports, training documentation, and regulatory logs.
- Monitor subcontractor performance and hold trade partners accountable.
- Support multiple projects throughout the Chicago area as required.
Qualifications
- At least 5 years of construction safety experience, preferably in heavy civil or infrastructure construction.
- Strong knowledge of OSHA construction standards and industry best practices.
- Experience with highways, bridges, excavation, utilities, drainage, concrete, transportation, or rail projects.
- Proven ability to conduct safety audits, incident investigations, and employee training.
- Strong leadership, communication, and documentation skills.
- OSHA 30-Hour Construction certification required or preferred.
- CHST, CSP, ASP, or a related safety certification is highly desirable.
- Experience working on IDOT, Illinois Tollway, City of Chicago, or similar public-sector projects is a plus.
