JOB SUMMARY
The Maintenance Worker II – Athletics is responsible for the skilled maintenance and preparation of athletic fields and surrounding park areas to ensure safe, functional, and visually appealing recreational spaces. This role requires a working knowledge of turf care, field layout standards, equipment operation, and basic irrigation and maintenance practices. The position contributes directly to the success of scheduled athletic events, tournaments, and daily park operations by executing high-quality field maintenance and supporting event logistics.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Athletic Field Maintenance
- Maintains turf and skinned areas including infields, pitcher’s mounds, base paths, and outfields in accordance with established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Conducts routine inspections and performs field repairs to ensure playability and safety.
- Prepares fields for sports such as baseball, soccer, and football by measuring, marking, dragging, and lining using templates and diagrams.
Groundskeeping and Landscaping
- Performs general grounds maintenance including mowing, edging, trimming, weeding, fertilizing, aerating, and overseeding.
- Prunes shrubs, trees, and landscape beds to maintain cleanliness and safety in and around athletic areas.
- Assists with trash pickup, facility cleaning, and restroom maintenance as needed.
Equipment Operation and Maintenance
- Operates a variety of maintenance equipment including tractors, mowers, sod cutters, aerators, trenchers, backpack blowers, and field painters.
- Performs preventative maintenance on equipment including blade sharpening, oil changes, filter replacements, and fueling.
- Reports damaged or malfunctioning equipment and ensures safe operation standards are met.
Technology and Precision Field Work
- Utilizes advanced tools such as GPS-guided line stripers, robotic mowers, and laser-level grading equipment to improve precision and efficiency.
- Assists with the installation and maintenance of irrigation systems and makes minor repairs as needed to ensure proper field hydration.
Event and Tournament Support
- Assists with setup and teardown for athletic events, tournaments, and community gatherings.
- Supports placement of field signage, benches, fencing, and temporary structures.
- Works non-standard hours including nights, weekends, and holidays for event preparation and coverage.
Communication and Team Support
- Maintains communication with peers, supervisors, youth sports associations, and park users to coordinate field use and maintenance.
- Collaborates with other departments and assists as needed to support general parks operations.
- Performs additional duties as assigned that fall within the scope of the job functions.
Pay: $18.52 - $26.85 per hour
