Summary:
The Material Handler is responsible for safely loading, unloading, moving, and staging steel materials throughout the warehouse and production areas. This position plays a vital role in ensuring materials are handled efficiently and accurately to support production schedules, quality standards, and customer requirements.
Essential Functions:
- Safely operate overhead cranes, forklifts, and related equipment to retrieve, move, and store steel plates and other materials.
- Maintain current knowledge of all material locations and promptly update location changes to ensure accurate inventory tracking.
- Read and interpret production schedules, work orders, and inventory reports to determine required materials, quantities, and priorities.
- Locate, stage, and distribute materials to designated production areas according to order requirements.
- Record and maintain accurate inventory of materials and parts received, stored, and distributed.
- Inspect and verify incoming materials for accuracy, including part numbers, mill information, and condition; document discrepancies or damage as needed.
- Verify material specifications against work tickets to ensure correct items are used in production.
- Accurately record mill heat numbers and update receiver logs; mark all received materials with appropriate identification and traceability information.
- Expedite transfer of materials between storage and production areas to maintain efficient workflow.
- Assist with periodic inventory counts and reconciliation.
- Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas in compliance with company housekeeping and safety policies.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors and team members regarding material needs and movement priorities.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support production and warehouse operations.
Education/Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- 1–3 years of material handling experience in a manufacturing or steel industry environment preferred.
- Experience operating forklifts and overhead cranes (certification preferred).
- Ability to read and interpret production documents, work orders, and inventory reports.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in recordkeeping.
- Basic computer and data entry skills.
- Commitment to safety and adherence to operational procedures.
- Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work on feet throughout the shift.
Work Environment:
While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly exposed to work near moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
