The Harker School is seeking a Boys Varsity Head Soccer Coach for its Upper School athletic program. This seasonal position will run from November through February. Practices and games generally take place Monday through Friday, with some evening and Saturday commitments depending on the competition schedule.
Our coaches must be committed to the personal development of our student-athletes. This includes teaching skills, techniques, and strategies relating to soccer while creating a competitive, supportive, and team-oriented environment. As the Varsity Head Coach, you will provide leadership for the program while helping students develop athletic skills, ethical behavior, good sportsmanship, leadership, accountability, and other important life skills.
Assumes responsibility for safely and effectively managing the Boys Varsity Soccer program and its student-athletes
Organizes and implements practice plans, game plans, team strategies, and player development
Provides instruction in soccer fundamentals, tactics, conditioning, and game strategy
Establishes expectations for student-athlete conduct, attendance, effort, and sportsmanship
Provides leadership and direction to assistant coaches and works collaboratively with the broader athletics staff
Communicates effectively with the Athletic Director, coaching staff, students, and parents
Stays informed regarding weekly sports emails, updated developments, and schedule changes
Follows all guidelines as expressed in the Upper School Coaches Handbook
Completes miscellaneous tasks and duties as requested
Attends coaches meetings and mandatory seasonal parent meetings
Ensures students participate in a fair and sportsmanlike manner
Ensures the safety and appropriate conduct of students while traveling to away games
Maintains knowledge of league, section, and state bylaws pertaining to soccer
Collaborates with other coaches to support the overall development and continuity of Harker's soccer program
Provides guidance for middle and/or lower school programs where applicable
Assumes responsibility for related duties as required or assigned
Ability to coach, mentor, and lead students ages 13–19
Strong background in competitive soccer
Knowledge of soccer fundamentals, rules, tactics, conditioning, and player development
Ability to develop effective practice plans and game strategies
Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
Ability to build a positive, competitive, and inclusive team culture
Ability to model and promote sportsmanship, accountability, teamwork, and ethical behavior
Majority of coaching responsibilities take place outdoors in varying weather conditions
May be subject to extended periods of standing, walking, running, or other physical activity during practices and games
Evening and occasional Saturday work may be required for games and competitions
Local travel may be required for away games and tournaments
Experience working with children preferred; must be comfortable working with and around school-age children
Previous competitive soccer playing and/or coaching experience
1–2 years of coaching experience preferred; previous head coaching or varsity-level coaching experience is strongly preferred

Pay for this position is determined according to The Harker School's established pay scale and is based on relevant education and experience, as evaluated by the Human Resources Department. The posted pay range reflects the full pay scale for this position. While the maximum rate is included for transparency, most new hires can expect to fall within the lower to middle portion of the pay scale based on their qualifications and experience.
