Position Summary
The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is a front-line healthcare provider responsible for delivering basic life support (BLS) and emergency medical care to patients in pre-hospital settings. Under direct supervision, the EMT assesses patient conditions, stabilizes injuries, and transports patients safely to medical facilities. This role is crucial for providing immediate, compassionate care and ensuring efficient transport during medical emergencies.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Patient Care and Assessment:
- Responds to emergency calls and performs rapid, systematic patient assessments.
- Administers basic life support interventions, including CPR, bleeding control, splinting, and basic airway management.
- Monitors vital signs and patient status, relaying information to higher-level providers or receiving facility staff.
- Assists patients with prescribed medications, such as nitroglycerin, epi-pens, and inhalers, when appropriate.
- Clearly and accurately documents all patient care, observations, and interventions in patient care reports (PCRs).
- Operational Duties:
- Safely operates and navigates an emergency vehicle to and from incident scenes and medical facilities.
- Ensures the ambulance and medical equipment are clean, stocked, and in good working order before, during, and after shifts.
- Communicates effectively with dispatch, hospital staff, and other public safety agencies.
- Adheres to all state and local EMS regulations and company policies.
- Teamwork and Professionalism:
- Works collaboratively with Paramedics, AEMTs, and other first responders to provide seamless patient care.
- Maintains a professional demeanor, showing empathy and respect for all patients and their families.
- Participates in ongoing training and continuing education to maintain licensure and enhance skills.
Required Skills and Abilities
- Proficiency in basic emergency medical procedures and patient assessment.
- Strong communication skills (verbal and written) for effective patient interaction and documentation.
- Ability to remain calm and perform effectively under pressure in emergency situations.
- Excellent teamwork and collaboration skills.
- In-depth knowledge of EMS protocols, HIPAA regulations, and patient confidentiality.
- Competence in operating and maintaining basic medical equipment.
- Strong geographical knowledge of the service area.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Must possess a valid EMT certification from a state-recognized and accredited program.
- Current state EMT license is mandatory.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.
- Previous experience in an emergency medical setting or similar environment is a plus.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to lift, carry, and move patients and equipment weighing up to 150 lbs, often with assistance from a partner.
- The role frequently requires kneeling, bending, stooping, crouching, and standing for extended periods to provide patient care.
- Ability to work in various environmental conditions, including extreme weather, confined spaces, and hazardous scenes.
- Must have the physical stamina to work long shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
