Job Summary
Idaho Candy Company is hiring a full time candy maker / machine operator to work at our historic 24,000 sq. ft. factory in downtown Boise making the famous Idaho Spud Bar, Butter Toffee, and other traditional candies.
- Idaho Candy Company utilizes some historic/antique equipment to make our traditional candies. Success in this role will require an active interest in learning to make the candies and operate the equipment well. A successful candy cook will need some mechanical curiosity and willingness to learn the operation of these machines but does not necessarily need direct experience with food equipment.
- Someone with experience in an industrial kitchen or restaurant prep would find some familiar activities in this role.
- The candy produced is different each week and requires different levels of effort. Some of the traditional toffee candies can be more physical, but not overly repetitive day in and day out.
Duties and Responsibilities:
● Take direction from plant supervisors on proper candy making
● Follow/conform to the company’s Good Manufacturing Procedures (see GMP’s)
o Hair/beard nets, no exposed jewelry on-shift, hand-washing, aprons, long pants, close-toed shoes, etc.
● Dependability, able to show up to work every day on time ready for work
● Eventual responsibility for following written steps of candy production, depositing, packaging and machinery maintenance
● Able to operate electric and manual pallet jacks
● Ability to use proper tools for the job and not damage equipment with the wrong tools
● Be a good team mate and support co-workers, committed to polite and uplifting communication
● Mechanical curiosity and willingness to receive training
● Should be able to lift 50 pound sacks as needed
● Self motivated, can be relied upon to work independently on a task if properly trained
● Able to tolerate some warm working conditions during summer months
● Able to wear protecting equipment as required (hearing protection, heat resistant gloves, etc.) depending on task
Great parts of the job:
- Small company; you’re not anonymous here. You’ll know everyone from the owner to the shipping clerk. Lots of our employees have been here for over a decade.
- Relaxed and friendly atmosphere. We have work to do but we get it done without freaking out.
- Variety - we produce different candies each week so it’s not monotonous
- Fun products - you’re making something that people really enjoy, and you’ll enjoy telling people about it.
- Early Weekends – During the summers we get our schedule done for the week and get the team out of here soon after lunch on Fridays.
Challenges in the job:
- Parking in downtown Boise can be tough, we use a lot 2 blocks away and pay for part of your parking cost.
- Cooking the toffee in a kettle and laying it out is a warm process. We have protective equipment and lots of help but it is work.
- During the hottest part of the summer, parts of the factory get warm. Summer is the slow season so we are usually taking it easier during the heat.
