Fairmount Park Conservancy brings parks to life. We work with the City of Philadelphia and its communities to steward our parks and nurture our shared environment, cultural resources, and public health. We lead capital projects and historic preservation efforts, foster neighborhood park stewardship, attract and leverage investments, and develop innovative programs across 10,200 acres, including Fairmount Park, six other watershed parks, and more than 130 neighborhood parks and gardens around the city.
Position Overview:
The Preservation Technician executes on-site and shop labor for the preservation team, including carpentry and masonry work on historic structures. This position requires competency in hands-on preservation trades work, good problem-solving abilities, self-motivation, and the ability to perform quality handwork efficiently.
This role directly reports to the Preservation Project Manager and works closely with the Senior Director of Capital Projects.
Responsibilities:
Duties broadly focus on the performance of assigned tasks within architectural conservation projects, and successfully administering the following duties:
- Perform preservation field and shop work, focusing on completing tasks assigned by senior staff and preparing for subsequent logical tasks
- Maintain high-quality work standards within an understood timeframe, typical for contract work
- Support the maintenance of safe and healthy work environments in the workshop and on all job sites
- Effectively communicate project information, needs, and status to staff and supervisor
- Maintain friendly and team-oriented relationships among clients and coworkers
- Participate in periodic community outreach workshops, as assigned, focusing on familiarizing participants with practicable preservation techniques and basic preservation philosophies
- Accurately record and submit time by project, consistent with timekeeping and certified payroll requirements
Qualifications:
- 4+ years of experience in hands-on woodworking, building trades, historic trades, or related field.
- Ability to complete the following tasks with minimal supervision:
- Competent and safe use of power tools, including but not limited to circular saw, table saw, miter saw, oscillator, jointer, planer, and router
- Cut and shape wood to precise specifications and fit joints to tight tolerances
- Speak knowledgeably about the aims, methods, and distinguishing features of preservation trades
- EPA Lead-Safe Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) Certified Renovator status and OSHA 10-Hour Construction certification required (or obtained within 90 days of hire)
- Focused listening, observation, and comprehension skills; effective written and verbal communication
- Ability to identify and resolve problems in a collaborative manner and at the direction of senior staff
- Required to possess a set of personal hand tools for use in the field
- Strong multi-tasking and time management skills
- Required to possess a valid state driver's license and personal transportation to job sites
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Comfortable regularly lifting, carrying, and moving heavy objects weighing up to 50 lbs
- Mobility: Stand, kneel, bend, crouch, and walk for extended periods (8 to 10-hour shifts)
- Ability to operate machinery and hand tools
- Comfortable working at significant heights, climbing ladders, scaffolding, and operating in confined spaces
- Environment: Ability to work in varying outdoor weather conditions and noisy, active construction environments
Compensation:
The salary range for this position is $54,000-$72,000, commensurate with experience. Additionally, Fairmount Park Conservancy offers a generous benefits package, including health, dental, and vision, as well as life, disability, and retirement benefits.
