General Service Technician
Summary:
Responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining vehicles in accordance with manufacturer and dealership standards. Performs advanced mechanical and electrical repairs, identifies vehicle concerns, communicates repair needs, and ensures all work is completed safely, efficiently, and accurately while delivering high-quality service to customers.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform vehicle inspections, diagnostics, maintenance, and repairs with accuracy and efficiency in accordance with dealership and manufacturer standards.
- Diagnose the cause of vehicle malfunctions and complete necessary repairs on automotive systems and components.
- Perform scheduled maintenance services, repairs, and inspections as assigned.
- Review repair orders and ensure all work is completed according to customer concerns and technician standards.
- Communicate with the parts department to identify and obtain required parts and materials.
- Save and tag warranty parts or customer-requested parts as required.
- Inspect vehicles for additional maintenance, safety concerns, or repair opportunities and communicate findings to the service advisor.
- Notify service advisors immediately when additional work is needed, repairs are unnecessary, or work cannot be completed within the promised timeframe.
- Accurately document all diagnostic findings, repairs performed, and recommended services on repair orders.
- Conduct road tests to verify vehicle concerns and confirm repair effectiveness, or coordinate testing with designated personnel.
- Maintain current knowledge of manufacturer repair procedures, service bulletins, recalls, and technical updates.
- Participate in manufacturer-sponsored training programs, certifications, and continuing education opportunities.
- Assist in training, mentoring, and supervising apprentice or entry-level technicians as assigned.
- Maintain accountability for dealership-owned tools, equipment, manuals, and technical resources.
- Report equipment malfunctions, tool deficiencies, or facility maintenance concerns to management.
- Ensure customer vehicles are protected and maintained in clean condition while in service.
- Immediately report any damage or condition changes affecting a customer’s vehicle.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
- Comply with all dealership policies, manufacturer requirements, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
- Follow OSHA, hazardous waste disposal, and workplace safety standards at all times.
- Operate tools, machinery, diagnostic equipment, lifts, and other shop equipment safely and properly.
- Communicate professionally and effectively with service advisors, management, coworkers, and customers when necessary.
- Report all safety concerns, hazards, accidents, and incidents promptly to management.
- Support departmental productivity, quality, and customer satisfaction goals.
- Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Associate degree in Automotive Technology, technical certification, equivalent training, or a combination of education and experience preferred.
- Two or more years of automotive repair and diagnostic experience preferred.
- Previous experience as a B-Level Technician or equivalent skill level preferred.
- Strong knowledge of automotive mechanical, electrical, and diagnostic systems.
- Ability to interpret repair manuals, technical service bulletins, schematics, and manufacturer service information.
- Proficiency with diagnostic equipment, hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment.
- Ability to troubleshoot and solve complex automotive repair issues.
- Ability to work independently while maintaining productivity and accuracy standards.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
- Excellent organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Ability to mentor and provide guidance to less experienced technicians.
- Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in a professional environment.
- Basic mathematical skills necessary for measurements, calculations, and repair procedures.
- Ability to follow written, verbal, and diagram-based instructions.
- Ability to safely lift, bend, stand, crouch, and perform physical work throughout the workday.
- Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record required.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements:
- Frequently works in a service shop environment with exposure to mechanical equipment, moving vehicles, chemicals, and automotive fluids.
- Requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, lifting, and reaching for extended periods.
- Must be able to safely operate shop equipment and use required personal protective equipment.
- Must adhere to all safety policies, procedures, and environmental regulations.
