About the Position
Under the guidance of experienced supervisors and engineering managers, Engineers at DPW perform a broad range of duties related to the planning, design, and review of public infrastructure. From roads and bridges to flood control systems and traffic safety enhancements, you’ll be directly involved in work that shapes our region.
Engineer I/II/III is a flexibly staffed series. Placement is based on qualifications and experience, with clear promotional opportunities as your career progresses.
Key Responsibilities May Include:
Designing roads, bridges, storm drains, debris basins, channels, landfills, and other public infrastructure
Preparing plans, specifications, and cost estimates for construction projects
Conducting engineering analysis using CAD and design software
Performing traffic studies, modeling, and signal design
Reviewing development plans and analyzing impacts on County infrastructure
Coordinating with public agencies, private developers, and internal departments
Preparing technical reports, documentation, and permit applications
Serving as assistant resident engineer or project inspector as needed
Guiding the work of engineering technicians and junior staff
INITIAL APPOINTMENT/ADVANCEMENT
Employment within the County offers Engineers excellent opportunities for advancement within the series as well as advancement into leadership roles. Engineers are hired at the levels listed below, and advance within the series, according to their qualifications. Incumbents may advance within the series upon meeting qualifications for the higher levels and receiving a satisfactory work progress report. Transportation Planning
Prepare project scopes and cost estimates, coordinate with agencies, assist with budgets, maintain records, and review plans and proposals.
Transportation Design
Assist with the in-house and consultant-led design of road and bridge projects. Contribute to plan preparation, construction support, and design reviews.
Traffic Engineering
Conduct traffic data analysis, design traffic control devices, and enhance roadway safety through engineering solutions.

Pre-Employment Process: Incumbent must successfully complete a background check prior to appointment.
Travel: Travel to various sites throughout the County is required; a valid California Class C driver license and proof of automobile liability insurance must be provided at time of hire. Mileage reimbursement is available.
Physical: This position includes the following demands: frequent sitting; occasional walking, standing, bending, and squatting; fine manipulation in both hands; continuously reach or work below the shoulder level; must frequently demonstrate near vision and occasionally demonstrate far vision; occasionally lift or carry ten (10) pounds or less; occasionally work near equipment and machinery on rough, uneven, rocky, or slippery surfaces; occasionally exposed to dust, gas, toxic materials, noise, and extremes in temperature and/or humidity; occasionally use protective equipment or clothing.
