Position Summary
The Planer Operator is responsible for setting up and operating industrial planers to machine large metal workpieces to precise dimensions and specifications. This position requires attention to detail, mechanical aptitude, and the ability to maintain tight tolerances while following safety and quality standards.
Responsibilities
- Set up and operate planer machines safely and efficiently.
- Read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and work orders.
- Measure finished parts using precision measuring equipment, including micrometers, calipers, indicators, and height gauges.
- Select and install cutting tools and fixtures.
- Perform machine adjustments to maintain dimensional accuracy.
- Inspect parts throughout the machining process.
- Perform routine maintenance and keep equipment clean.
- Report machine issues or quality concerns promptly.
- Work closely with supervisors and other machinists to meet production schedules.
- Follow all company safety policies and quality procedures.
QualificationsRequired
- High school diploma or GED.
- Mechanical aptitude and ability to work with precision measuring instruments.
- Ability to read blueprints and shop drawings.
- Ability to safely operate overhead cranes or willingness to learn.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing quality work.
Preferred
- Previous experience operating a planer, milling machine, or other manual machining equipment.
- Experience in a machine shop or manufacturing environment.
- Knowledge of machining practices, cutting tools, feeds, and speeds.
