This position is for 8.00 hours per day, 257 days (12 months) per year, is compensated according to Lane 3 of the Custodial Salary Schedule, and is eligible for benefits. Purpose Statement
The job of Assiatant Head Custodian, Junior High School was established for the purpose/s of maintaining an attractive, sanitary and safe facility for students, staff and public; providing equipment and furniture arrangements for meetings, classroom activities and events; minimizing property damage, loss and liability exposure; ensuring that assignments are completed in a safe, proper and timely manner and overseeing part-time custodians in the performance of their assignments.
Essential Functions

Arranges and supervises the arrangement of furnishings and equipment for the purpose of providing adequate preparations for assemblies, lunchroom, meetings, classroom activities, and special events. Chairs risk management committee and serves on other school committees as may be required for the purpose of conveying information and/or receiving information. Cleans and supervises the cleaning of the school facilities (e.g. classrooms, offices, restrooms, multipurpose rooms, grounds, snow removal, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a sanitary, safe and attractive environment.

Coordinates scheduled special events, meetings, community functions, etc. (e.g. records hours facility used, custodial hours required, equipment used, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring availability of facilities and/or equipment and providing information required for billing.

Delivers various items (e.g. supplies, mail, packages, furniture, etc.) for the purpose of distributing materials to the appropriate parties.

Directs assistant head custodian, part-time custodial personnel and substitute staff for the purpose of maximizing the efficiency of the work force, assisting in performance evaluations, and meeting shift requirements.

Inspects school facilities for the purpose of ensuring that the site is suitable for safe operations, maintained in an attractive and clean condition, and performing necessary minor repairs due to vandalism, equipment breakage, weather conditions, etc. and/or referring to other district personnel for resolution.

Maintains supplies and equipment (e.g. cleaning solutions, paper products, vacuums, mops, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of items required to properly maintain facilities.

Performs fire drills for the purpose of ensuring that staff and students are familiar with emergency procedures.

Prepares documentation (e.g. work schedules, work orders, requisitions, budget requests, etc.) for the purpose of providing written support and/or conveying information.

Prepares facility for daily operations (e.g. opening gates, building access doors, disarming security systems, heaters, repairs, snow removal, programs bell systems, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring school facilities are operational and safe for occupancy.

Repairs furniture, doors, hangs blackboards, emergency repairs, replace filters, ceiling, walls, etc. for the purpose of ensuring the safe and efficient utilization of space.

Responds to immediate safety and/or operational concerns, including after hours (e.g. facility damage, injured and ill students, alarms, etc.)

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (SKAs)
Knowledge
Sanitation & Hygiene: Comprehensive understanding of commercial cleaning methods, sanitization protocols, and infection control (especially critical for middle school locker rooms, cafeterias, and restrooms).
Chemical Safety: Knowledge of safe handling, mixing, and storage of industrial cleaning chemicals, including strict adherence to Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and OSHA regulations.
Equipment Maintenance: Understanding of the operation and basic maintenance of heavy-duty cleaning equipment (e.g., auto-scrubbers, floor buffers, carpet extractors, power washers).
Facility Operations: Basic working knowledge of building systems, including HVAC controls, plumbing shut-offs, electrical panels, and security/alarm systems.
Skills
Leadership & Supervision: Ability to train, direct, and motivate evening custodial staff, ensuring quality control and completion of assigned zones.
Technical Cleaning: Proficiency in hard floor care (stripping, waxing, buffing) and carpet care (spotting, extracting).
Minor Maintenance: Skill in performing basic preventative maintenance and minor repairs (e.g., changing light bulbs, fixing locker jams, adjusting desks, plunging toilets).
Communication & Tech: Basic computer skills to manage electronic work order systems, submit inventory requests, and communicate via email with the Head Custodian and school administration.
Abilities
Adaptability & Problem-Solving: The ability to rapidly prioritize tasks during emergencies (e.g., sudden spills, plumbing leaks, post-event cleanups) while managing the regular workflow.
De-escalation & Demeanor: The patience and professionalism required to interact safely and positively with middle school students, staff, and after-school community groups.
Attention to Detail: The ability to consistently identify maintenance needs, safety hazards (like trip hazards or broken glass), and security breaches (unlocked doors/windows) during the evening lockdown.
Self-Direction: The ability to work efficiently with minimal direct supervision once the administrative staff leaves the building.
Working Conditions & Physical Demands
Physical Demands
Continuous Movement: Must be able to stand, walk, and maneuver for the duration of an 8-hour shift, often on hard surfaces (concrete, tile, gymnasium floors).
Heavy Lifting: Regular requirement to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds unassisted (e.g., trash bags, chemical drums, furniture, bleachers). Occasional lifting of up to 100 pounds with assistance.
Agility & Flexibility: Frequent bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, and reaching above the shoulders.
Climbing: Ability to safely ascend and descend step ladders and extension ladders to replace lighting, clean windows, or access roof hatches.
Environmental Conditions
Hazardous Exposure: Regular handling of commercial cleaning chemicals, disinfectants, and occasional exposure to bodily fluids/bloodborne pathogens (requiring proper PPE).
Climate & Weather: Frequent exposure to loud noises (e.g., floor machinery, boiler rooms, crowded gymnasiums) and occasional exposure to extreme outdoor weather when handling trash removal, snow shoveling, or groundskeeping.
Shift Realities: Primarily an afternoon/evening position. May require occasional overtime, weekend work for sporting events/dances, or on-call availability for snow removal and building emergencies.
