1. Respond promptly to emergency calls; assess patient condition and determine appropriate care.
2. Obtain patient history, perform focused physical exams, and provide emergency medical treatment at the scene and during transport.
3. Administer basic life support interventions, including CPR, oxygen therapy, and airway management, following established EMT standards, policies, and protocols.
4. Monitor patient status, document condition changes, and report findings accurately and in a timely manner.
5. Safely transport, transfer, and assist patients using proper lifting and moving techniques.
6. Maintain cleanliness and readiness of ambulance, equipment, and supplies; restock as needed and follow infection control procedures.
7. Perform routine checks of ambulance condition; report concerns promptly.
8. Communicate courteously and professionally with patients, families, healthcare staff, dispatch, and other responders via radio, telephone, and in person.
9. Participate in continuing education, departmental training, and quality improvement activities to maintain certification and enhance patient care.
10. Assist with orientation of new staff, attend meetings and in-services, and complete required documentation in an accurate and timely manner.
11. Perform additional duties, special projects, or committee participation as assigned to support departmental and organizational goals.
12. Maintain all required continuing education and certifications; document in compliance with organizational and regulatory standards.
13. Demonstrate positive, professional customer service and teamwork at all times.
14. Adhere to the organization’s attendance, scheduling, and payroll policies, including participation in shift work, overtime, and on-call duties as required.
15. Support departmental and organizational quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.
16. Perform duties in alignment with the hospital’s mission, vision, and strategic goals, while maintaining cost-effective and efficient work practices.
17. Comply with all organizational and departmental policies, procedures, and standards of conduct.
Required Competencies:
· Demonstrates ability to perform patient assessment, obtain history, and recognize life-threatening conditions.
· Provides basic life support interventions including CPR, airway management, bleeding control, splinting, and oxygen administration.
· Safely lifts, transfers, and transports patients using proper body mechanics and approved equipment.
· Accurately documents patient care, condition changes, and interventions in accordance with hospital and WVOEMS requirements.
· Operates emergency vehicles safely and in compliance with state laws and departmental policies.
· Maintains knowledge of and adheres to HIPAA regulations, patient privacy standards, and professional confidentiality.
· Follows established infection control procedures and uses appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
· Demonstrates effective communication with patients, families, team members, dispatch, and receiving facilities.
· Participates in continuing education and maintains current certifications as required by WVOEMS and the hospital.
· Applies critical thinking and sound judgment under stressful and emergency conditions.
