Position Summary
The Low Voltage Cabling Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate and competitive costestimates for structured cabling and low voltage systems projects. This role requires a thorough understanding of telecommunications infrastructure, data networking, security systems, audio/visual systems, and applicable industry standards. The Estimator works closely with the sales, project management, and operations teams to ensure bids are complete, profitable, and aligned with client specifications.
Key Responsibilities
Estimating & Bid Preparation
- Review and analyze RFPs, RFQs, blueprints, specifications, and scopes of work to develop comprehensive cost estimates.
- Perform material take-offs for structured cabling systems including Cat6/Cat6A, fiber optic, coax, and associated hardware.
- Solicit and evaluate subcontractor and vendor quotes for materials, equipment, and labor.
- Prepare detailed bid packages including labor, materials, equipment, overhead, and profit margin.
- Develop and maintain a database of unit costs, labor rates, and vendor pricing for accurate estimating.
- Ensure all estimates comply with applicable codes (NEC, ANSI/TIA, BICSI) and client standards.
Project & Systems Scope
- Estimate structured cabling systems: voice, data, fiber optic backbone, horizontal distribution.
- Estimate low voltage systems including access control, CCTV/IP video surveillance, intrusion detection, nurse call, paging/intercom, and A/V systems.
- Assess job site conditions through site surveys and pre-bid walkthroughs to identify installation challenges and cost impacts.
- Review architectural, mechanical, and electrical drawings to identify conflicts and coordination requirements.
Collaboration & Communication
- Collaborate with sales team to develop winning bid strategies and present estimates to clients.
- Participate in pre-bid meetings, job walks, and scope clarification calls with general contractors and owners.
- Coordinate with project managers during project handoff to ensure accurate scope transfer and budget alignment.
- Build and maintain relationships with suppliers, subcontractors, and manufacturer representatives.
- Respond to RFIs and provide value engineering alternatives when appropriate.
Administrative & Reporting
- Maintain organized records of all bids, quotes, and project documentation in the estimating software system.
- Track bid results and win/loss data to improve future estimating accuracy.
- Prepare and submit change order estimates for awarded projects as needed.
- Report estimating workload, pipeline, and bid status to the Director of Estimating on a regular basis.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in construction management, Electronics Technology, Telecommunications, or a related field preferred.
- Minimum 3–5 years of experience in low voltage cabling estimating or a related field.
- Demonstrated experience estimating structured cabling, fiber optic, and security/A/V systems.
- Experience reading and interpreting construction drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
Certifications (Preferred)
- BICSI Installer 2 or Technician certification
- RCDD (Registered Communications Distribution Designer)
- CompTIA Network+ or equivalent
- Manufacturer certifications from CommScope, Panduit, Belden, or similar
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in estimating software (e.g., Accubid, Bluebeam, On-Screen Takeoff, or similar).
- Solid understanding of TIA-568, TIA-569, TIA-606 standards and NEC Article 800 requirements.
- Working knowledge of IP networking concepts, structured cabling topology, and fiber optic systems.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook); experience with project management software a plus.
- Ability to read and interpret AutoCAD drawings is desirable.

Physical Requirements
- Primarily office-based with occasional site visits requiring standing, walking, and climbing ladders.
- Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. occasionally.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required for site visits.
