Job Purpose
The Tinter is responsible for ensuring finished paint products consistently meet customer color and quality specifications through precise color evaluation, analytical decision-making, and technical expertise. This role accurately tints water-based and solvent-based coatings, including textured, metallic, and stain products, by utilizing batch tickets, computerized color-matching technology, and visual color assessment. The Tinter prepares color panels, analyzes color measurements against established standards, and determines the adjustments required to achieve an exact color match. Working closely with the Production team, the Tinter provides detailed direction for tint additions and batch corrections to ensure products meet customer requirements while maintaining the highest standards of quality, consistency, and efficiency. This position requires exceptional attention to detail, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to make accurate decisions with minimal supervision in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
Responsibilities

Review batch tickets and customer specifications to determine required color standards and tinting requirements for each batch.

Evaluate completed paint batches by preparing color drawdown panels and comparing them to approved color standards using computerized color-matching equipment and visual color evaluation.

Analyze color measurement data and determine the appropriate tint additions or batch adjustments required to achieve customer specifications.

Communicate clear and accurate tint adjustment instructions to Production to ensure batches are corrected efficiently and remain within specification.

Mix pigments, colorants, and base materials according to established formulas and documented procedures.

Perform multiple tint adjustments, as needed, until the batch meets approved color and quality standards.

Prepare samples and documentation for Quality Control testing and approval.

Weigh samples and perform required calculations, including weight per gallon, in accordance with quality procedures.

Calibrate and verify the accuracy of color measurement equipment at the beginning of each shift and throughout the day as required.

Maintain the cleanliness, calibration, and proper operation of all color-matching equipment, calibration standards, and work areas.

Maintain and update standard color panels and electronic color data to ensure accurate color comparisons.

Review daily production schedules and batch reports to prioritize tinting activities and support production deadlines.

Monitor and maintain inventory of tint colorants, pigments, color panels, and related supplies; coordinate replenishment as needed.

Follow all quality, safety, and environmental procedures while handling coatings, pigments, solvents, and related materials.

Work collaboratively with Production, Quality Control, and Operations to resolve color-related issues and support continuous improvement initiatives.

Ensure batches remain properly covered when not actively being worked on to prevent contamination or solvent loss.

Verify agitators are operated according to established procedures, including turning them off between tint adjustments when required to prevent excessive heat buildup and solvent loss.

Job Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required; technical training or an associate degree in Chemistry, Quality, Manufacturing, or a related field is preferred.

Previous experience in paint, coatings, manufacturing, quality control, laboratory, or color matching is strongly preferred.

Experience using color measurement equipment (spectrophotometer or color computer) is a plus.

Ability to accurately read and interpret batch tickets, production documentation, and written work instructions.

Strong attention to detail with the ability to identify subtle color differences and make sound quality decisions.

In this role, you will be responsible for ensuring every batch of paint meets our customers' exact color specifications. Using batch tickets, color measurement software, and industry-standard color matching techniques, you will evaluate completed paint batches, prepare drawdown panels, compare results to established standards, and analyze color data to determine any adjustments needed. You will work closely with the production team by providing precise instructions on tint additions and corrections to bring each batch within specification.
