The Beautiful Deeds Foundation has partnered with local organizations to create Get Healthy Franklin County, a community-based healthy lifestyles program addressing the disproportionate impact of poor nutrition, food insecurity, and preventable chronic disease on underserved populations. Limited access to nutrition education, affordable healthy foods, and supportive community resources contributes to higher rates of diet-related illness, increased health care costs, reduced workforce participation, and persistent poverty. The program provides monthly community health experiences that emphasize nutrition, physical activity, sleep, stress resilience, and social connection. These sessions help participants adopt sustainable healthy behaviors, reduce chronic disease risk, and build self-efficacy in managing lifestyle habits. The program also connects participants to vital resources such as food assistance programs, preventive health services, and community partners that address social determinants of health. AmeriCorps VISTA members will support program infrastructure and community capacity by assisting with participant and volunteer recruitment, building cross-sector partnerships, strengthening data tracking and evaluation, and creating systems that promote long-term sustainability. VISTA members will help develop standardized curricula, participant-to-volunteer pathways, and story-banking initiatives to capture program impact, ensuring the program continues to serve residents beyond the VISTA term. Get Healthy Franklin County aims to reduce health disparities, improve lifestyle behaviors, and enhance economic stability for participants facing barriers to preventive care. Through these efforts, the program not only supports immediate behavior change but also strengthens countywide systems to sustain healthier, more resilient communities.
