Hyperion Automation is seeking a hands-on Mechanical Engineering who can combine strong custom machine-design capability with practical day-to-day leadership.
This is a player-coach position. You will contribute directly to complex mechanical design work while setting technical direction, reviewing designs, coaching team members, and helping the team make practical, well-reasoned decisions.
This is a discipline-level technical leadership role without direct reports. The Engineering Manager will retain formal people management, staffing, compensation, department priorities, and overall Engineering accountability.
What You Will Do
- Provide day-to-day technical leadership to mechanical engineering and design team members.
- Contribute directly to concept development, system layouts, 3D models, detailed designs, drawings, bills of material, design validation, troubleshooting, and commissioning support.
- Set routine mechanical direction for assigned projects and workstreams.
- Lead concept, design, release-readiness, and corrective-action reviews.
- Review system layouts, mechanisms, calculations, drawings, tolerances, component selections, guarding, safety considerations, and mechanical interfaces.
- Ensure designs account for manufacturability, assembly sequence, installation, adjustment, maintenance, serviceability, ergonomics, and total project cost.
- Require corrections or pause designs that are incomplete, unsafe, insufficiently reviewed, impractical to manufacture or assemble, or otherwise unready for release.
- Coach team members through design challenges, technical decisions, prioritization, communication, and execution concerns.
- Give direct, constructive feedback while helping others develop stronger design judgment, ownership, and independence.
- Identify design errors, labor drift, procurement constraints, unresolved decisions, and technical risks before they create downstream problems.
- Balance technical quality with cost, fabrication effort, build complexity, schedule, and client requirements.
- Partner with Automation Engineering, Project Management, Assembly, Supply Chain, Sales, vendors, and clients throughout the project lifecycle.
- Improve design standards, reusable models, libraries, templates, calculation tools, checklists, release practices, and lessons-learned feedback.
- Serve as the mechanical owner or technical lead on larger, higher-risk, or more complex work when assigned.
What You Bring
- At least 7 years of progressive experience designing custom automation equipment, industrial machinery, robotic systems, or other engineer-to-order equipment.
- Strong hands-on experience developing concepts, layouts, 3D models, detailed designs, drawings, and bills of material for complex integrated equipment.
- Advanced proficiency with SolidWorks, including complex assemblies, detailed drawings, and bills of material.
- Experience carrying mechanical designs through fabrication, assembly, installation, and commissioning.
- Demonstrated experience leading technical work, reviewing the work of others, coaching team members, and making timely mechanical engineering decisions.
- Strong understanding of materials, manufacturing processes, structural design, GD&T, tolerance analysis, fits, fasteners, pneumatics, motion components, guarding, and machine safety.
- Practical understanding of machining, welding, manufacturability, assembly, installation, maintenance, serviceability, and cost.
- A bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or mechanical engineering technology, or an equivalent combination of education and directly relevant experience.
- Ability to communicate directly and constructively during difficult technical or people-related conversations.
- Willingness to travel occasionally, generally less than 5%, including domestic and occasional international travel.
Preferred Experience
- SolidWorks PDM or another formal product-data or revision-management system.
- Robotic cells, end-of-arm tooling, fixtures, conveyors, material-handling systems, machine frames, guarding, or custom mechanisms.
- Structural calculations, finite-element analysis, prototyping, or other advanced design-validation methods.
- Improving design standards, reusable libraries, documentation practices, checklists, or design-review processes.
