Position Summary: This position will be responsible for delivering literacy tutoring services intended to improve academic outcomes with early learning/elementary students in the community. Service members will be responsible for working with students identified by teachers and school administration that are at risk of falling behind academic standards in their respective grades. The ideal candidate will be motivated to work with young students, be punctual and reliable, have great communication skills, and be goal oriented. This is a service volunteer position that does provide a living allowance and educational award (described below).
Location: Services will primarily be provided in an elementary school within Henry County. Depending on need, services could be offered in a community-based organization such as YMCA, local early learning centers, libraries, or local neighborhood hubs such as community resource rooms in housing developments.
Hours: Tutoring Specialists will typically serve regular school day hours with occasional opportunities to support after-school programs/events. There may be some weekend opportunities for obtaining service hour commitments.
Impact: Services will be provided to improve educational outcomes of early learning/elementary students that are currently not meeting satisfactory performance levels. Emphasis will be placed on literacy-related outcomes, specifically working to ensure students are reading at grade level. These services will improve the educational outcomes of students enrolled in the program, their satisfaction and engagement with school, and their confidence to continue progressing through their educational journey.
Immediate Supervisor: Site supervisors will be assigned at each service location, e.g., Elementary School Principal, along with United Way Program Manager.
Essential Functions and Requirements of Position:
- Tutors engage in direct-service Early Learning/K-2 literacy tutoring (one-on-one or in small groups).
- Follow instructions and guidance provided by school staff
- Complete national service program requirements including reporting, training (online and in-person), professional learning cluster meetings, and community service projects around National Days of Service.
- Adhere to school policies and procedures as listed in the staff handbook.
- Work with other tutors to build community-based literacy resources that can be shared within and between schools.
- Other tasks as assigned by school personnel to support the students and staff in delivering education services.
- Connect students and their families with resources needed to improve their stability.
- Identify and refer families of students that may benefit from resources such as nutritional assistance, clothing, etc. which may make it more difficult to prioritize learning.
- Promote and encourage peer and cross-age tutoring opportunities.
- Serve with English Language Learners and coordinate activities to increase English proficiency.
- Support family and community events and service projects.
- Clear a National Criminal History Check, DSS Central Registry and TB screen.
- Be at least 18 years of age and possess US Citizenship or Permanent Resident status
Benefits:
- Commit to serving a specified number of hours during the school year as stated below:
- Type A: 1200 hours
- Type B: 900 hours (limited positions)
- Earn a living allowance based on successfully delivering the required hours
- Type A: $16,800 paid for serving full term, paid in bi-monthly installments
- Type B: $12,600 paid for serving full term, paid in bi-monthly installments
- Tutors in good standing will be provided reasonable flexibility to aaccommodate time away from serving for sick leave, medical appointments and other pre-approved needs.
- Earn a Segal education award $3,697 to be used for college, trade school, or other educational expenses, including qualified federal loans.
Pay: From $14.00 per hour
