Job Type: Full-time
Schedule: Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Location: Hutchins, Tx
Pay: 25+ based on experience and skill level
Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Submerged Arc Welder / ASME Code Welder for production fabrication of boilers, pressure vessels, tanks, and related industrial equipment.
This is a shop-based manufacturing position primarily responsible for setting up and operating submerged arc welding equipment to complete longitudinal and circumferential pressure-retaining welds. The successful candidate must be able to pass our company weld test and consistently produce sound welds that meet applicable ASME Code, approved welding procedure, drawing, and Quality Control requirements.
Primary Responsibilities
- Set up and operate submerged arc welding, or SAW, equipment for production welding.
- Perform longitudinal and circumferential seam welding on boiler shells, pressure vessels, drums, furnaces, tanks, and related components.
- Set welding voltage, amperage, wire-feed speed, travel speed, electrode extension, flux coverage, and equipment alignment in accordance with the approved WPS.
- Install and align welding heads, wire reels, contact tips, flux hoppers, guides, tractors, manipulators, turning rolls, and welding positioners.
- Verify joint preparation, bevel angle, root opening, alignment, cleanliness, tack welding, and backing arrangements before welding.
- Monitor weld-puddle behavior, arc stability, flux coverage, bead placement, penetration, and weld profile throughout the welding operation.
- Maintain proper tracking of the weld joint and make controlled adjustments during welding.
- Apply run-on and run-off tabs when required.
- Remove slag and clean each weld pass before additional welding.
- Use grinders, chipping tools, carbon-arc gouging equipment, and other weld-preparation tools as required.
- Grind starts, stops, tie-ins, weld transitions, and completed welds to meet drawing and Quality Control requirements.
- Follow approved welding procedure specifications, or WPSs, and applicable ASME Section IX welder or welding-operator qualification requirements.
- Monitor and document preheat and interpass temperatures when required.
- Control and maintain welding flux to prevent contamination or moisture exposure.
- Recover, screen, and reuse flux only in accordance with company procedures and the applicable WPS.
- Visually inspect completed welds for proper reinforcement, bead contour, tie-in, undercut, overlap, porosity, slag inclusions, arc strikes, and other discontinuities.
- Perform weld repairs only when authorized and in accordance with approved repair procedures.
- Record required welding information, including welder or operator identification, weld identification, process, and production documentation.
- Work with fitters, Quality Control inspectors, supervisors, and other production personnel to maintain quality and production schedules.
- Maintain welding equipment, leads, cables, contact tips, flux systems, positioners, turning rolls, and work areas in safe operating condition.
- Follow all company safety procedures for welding, grinding, material handling, overhead cranes, confined spaces, and industrial equipment.
Required Qualifications
- Must be able to pass the company’s submerged arc weld test and required welding-operator qualification.
- Previous experience operating submerged arc welding equipment.
- Experience performing multi-pass welds on carbon steel.
- Ability to set up and adjust SAW equipment without continuous supervision.
- Ability to recognize and correct weld-tracking, slag-removal, flux-coverage, penetration, and bead-profile problems.
- Proficiency using angle grinders and weld-preparation tools.
- Ability to read fabrication drawings, weld symbols, joint details, and welding procedure specifications.
- Ability to follow written production, welding, and Quality Control procedures.
- Ability to recognize common weld defects and make acceptable corrections.
- Ability to safely operate or work around turning rolls, positioners, manipulators, tractors, and overhead cranes.
- Dependable attendance and ability to report to work by 7:00 a.m.
- Ability to work safely in an industrial manufacturing environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous boiler, pressure-vessel, tank, pipe, or heavy-fabrication welding experience.
- Current or previous qualification as a welding operator under ASME Section IX.
- Experience working under an ASME Quality Control Program.
- Experience welding SA-516 Grade 70 or similar pressure-vessel carbon steels.
- Experience with full-penetration groove welds and pressure-retaining seams.
- Experience welding shell plate using turning rolls or column-and-boom manipulators.
- Experience with both inside and outside seam welding.
- Experience with back-gouging and completing second-side welds.
- Experience using carbon-arc gouging, plasma cutting, or oxy-fuel cutting equipment.
- Experience producing welds subject to radiographic, ultrasonic, magnetic-particle, or liquid-penetrant examination.
- GMAW/MIG or FCAW/flux-core experience for root passes, tie-ins, attachments, or repairs.
- Experience with automatic or mechanized welding systems.
Physical Requirements
- Frequently stand, bend, kneel, crouch, climb, and work in various positions.
- Safely lift and handle welding equipment, flux, wire reels, grinders, leads, and fabrication tools.
- Work around heat, sparks, fumes, grinding dust, welding flux, noise, and heavy industrial equipment.
- Wear required personal protective equipment throughout the workday.
- Work inside or around boiler shells and pressure-vessel components when required.
- Safely access work platforms, ladders, vessel interiors, and elevated work areas as required.
