This position reports to the Commissioner of Public Works and/or other designated Town officers or senior-level employees. This is a supervisory position responsible for management of the Highway Department, including operations and direct supervision of all subordinate foremen, staff, equipment operators and laborers assigned to the Department. In accordance with policy directives, determines and executes work priorities and scheduling for foremen and work crews and coordinates Highway Department resources to meet goals in a timely manner.
Responsibilities include highway maintenance, repaving, repair and construction; snow plowing; leaf and brush collection and disposition of materials collected; organizing and executing timely response to resident needs as directed by Commissioner of Public Works. The employee will have responsibility for other related public works duties as required by seasonal or operational demands. The employee is responsible for efficient and economical use of staff, materials and equipment in accordance with established policies and procedures, including but not limited to responsibly controlling overtime. Incumbent may be required to be on twenty-four hour call seven days a week.
This is a full-time, provisional, 40-hour/week civil service position, Monday-Friday, and may require weekends and on-call availability to meet the demands of the department. Wage starts at $38.10 per hour. A Civil Service Exam is required for this position.
A Class B license is required for this position.
Candidate must live in Monroe County for at least 4 months prior to beginning employment, since Monroe County Civil Service Residency requirements apply to this position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, plus EITHER:
(A) Five (5) years of full-time or its part-time equivalent paid experience in the construction, maintenance and repair of roads, two (2) years of which shall have involved supervision; OR,
(B) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate's degree in Construction Technology or a related field, plus three (3) years of experience in the construction, maintenance and repair of roads, two (2) years of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity; OR,
(C) Any equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B) above.
NOTE: Additional experience may be substituted for the high school diploma on a year-for-year basis.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid New York State Class *3* Operator's license at the time of appointment.
Candidates may be required to pass a physical examination at the time of appointment.
Pay: $38.10 - $52.61 per hour
