Job Overview
The In-Home Caregivers/Direct Support Professional (DSP) provides compassionate, person-centered care and support to individuals with disabilities or special needs. This role focuses on assisting individuals with daily living activities, promoting independence, and enhancing overall quality of life. DSPs support clients in achieving personal goals, maintaining a safe and healthy environment, and participating in community activities while ensuring dignity, respect, and compliance with care plans and organizational policies.
Responsibilities
- Be responsible for implementing the services outlined in Individual(s) ISP.
- Provide services in the Individual(s) residence, being respectful of their environment, family and family culture.
- As appropriate, and when requested by Individual(s) and their families, assist in any activities of daily living ("ADL").
- Be involved in all areas of the Individual(s) daily activities, as appropriate, to enable the individual(s) to feel safe, engaged and unconditionally valued, and to return unconditional value towards others
- Prepare food for Individual(s) per established guidelines and menus.
- Perform, on a limited and appropriate basis, routine property maintenance and housekeeping for Individual(s), including general cleaning and laundry.
- Attend continuing education training, meetings, workshops and updates in the field of developmental and intellectual disabilities, behavioral health and quality of life and all mandated training as required.
Skills
- Proven experience working in assisted living, nursing homes, or home & community care settings
- Knowledge of patient observation techniques and dementia or Alzheimer’s care practices
- Familiarity with medication administration, vital signs monitoring, and care plan implementation
- Strong understanding of HIPAA regulations to ensure resident privacy and confidentiality
- Ability to perform heavy lifting safely and operate assistive devices like Hoyer lifts
- Excellent communication skills for working with individuals with developmental disabilities or autism spectrum disorder
- Patience, empathy, and a proactive approach to caregiving that promotes resident independence and dignity
