We are a tax controversy practice led by an attorney-CPA, and the work we do is more specific than a general compliance shop. You will mainly prepare fiduciary and entity returns, but you will also reconstruct books for non-filers who haven't filed in six years, analyze IRS account transcripts to figure out their real compliance history, organize financials to support offers in compromise and installment agreements, and prepare returns that get filed into active examinations and appeals. Every client engagement has a problem attached to it.
This is a full-time, fully remote position.
What You'll Do
- Prepare and review fiduciary income tax returns (Form 1041), including estates in administration, complex and simple trusts, grantor trusts, and final-year filings
- Prepare and review entity returns: Forms 1120, 1120-S, and 1065, including basis tracking, partner and shareholder allocations, and K-1 reporting
- Prepare individual returns (Form 1040), including delinquent and reconstructed filings for multi-year non-filers
- Rebuild accounting records where books are incomplete, missing, or unreliable
- Pull and analyze IRS account and wage-and-income transcripts to establish filing history and exposure
- Support collection matters: Forms 433-A/B, offer in compromise financials, installment agreement proposals, and penalty abatement requests
- Handle multistate filing and apportionment issues
- Work directly with the firm's attorneys on examination, appeals, and voluntary disclosure matters
What We're Looking For
- Active CPA license or Enrolled Agent credential (required)
- 5+ years preparing federal tax returns in public accounting, a law firm tax practice, or a trust department
- Demonstrated hands-on experience with Form 1041; this is a core part of the role, not an occasional return
- Solid working knowledge of pass-through and corporate returns: S corporation basis and AAA, partnership allocations and capital account reporting, reasonable compensation
- Comfortable working independently on incomplete records and unusual fact patterns
- Clear written communication; you will be documenting positions that get reviewed by taxing authorities
Helpful but not required: experience with international information returns (Forms 5471, 3520, 8938, FBAR), fiduciary accounting, or prior exposure to IRS examination or collection practice.
What Makes This a Unique Opportunity for CPAs
The practice is run by an attorney-CPA who came up through accounting, so your technical work will be reviewed by someone who actually holds your credential and understands your professional obligations. We support CPE and cover license renewal and professional dues.
Most preparers never see how a return performs once a taxing authority actually pushes on it. Here you'll be working alongside attorneys on examinations, appeals, collection matters, and voluntary disclosures.
Note: Please note in your application the approximate number of Forms 1041 you have prepared or reviewed in the last three years, and the tax software you have used.
