Role Description
As the Court Evaluator for the Alliance Evaluation & Treatment (E&T) Facility, you will play a critical role in Washington State's involuntary treatment process by conducting clinical evaluations, preparing legal documentation, and ensuring individuals receive appropriate treatment while protecting their legal rights. Working closely with psychiatrists, psychiatric nurse practitioners, nurses, therapists, and other behavioral health professionals, you will evaluate patients to determine whether they meet the legal criteria for involuntary commitment or a Less Restrictive Alternative (LRA) under RCW 71.05. You will gather and analyze clinical information, interview patients, review medical records and collateral information, and prepare petitions and affidavits for court proceedings.
This position serves as a key liaison between the treatment team and the legal system. You will manage court deadlines, maintain commitment calendars, ensure all required documentation is completed accurately and on time, and testify as an expert witness during involuntary commitment hearings. A strong understanding of behavioral health, clinical assessment, legal standards, and court procedures is essential, as you will communicate effectively with judges, attorneys, treatment providers, patients, and family members throughout the commitment process.
In addition to court-related responsibilities, you will document patient interactions in the electronic health record, provide patients with information regarding their legal rights, and support treatment planning through participation in multidisciplinary team meetings. You will also assist in training and mentoring other mental health professionals in Court Evaluator responsibilities, helping to maintain compliance with state laws, agency policies, and best practices.
The ideal candidate is an organized, detail-oriented behavioral health professional who is comfortable balancing clinical judgment with legal requirements in a fast-paced inpatient psychiatric environment. Success in this role requires exceptional written and verbal communication skills, sound clinical decision-making, the ability to work collaboratively under strict legal timelines, and a commitment to providing compassionate, patient-centered care while ensuring public safety and legal compliance.
