SUMMARY
We are seeking an experienced Turbomachinery CNC Lathe Operator to machine large turbomachinery bolting, including center studs and tie rods up to 2.5" diameter and 10 feet in length. This role focuses on holding tight tolerances, straightness, and runout on long, critical rotating components.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Set up and operate CNC lathes to turn center studs, tie rods, and related hardware to blueprint specifications.
Interpret engineering drawings, work orders, and process sheets, including diameters, tolerances, GD&T callouts, and thread/fillet requirements.
Program at the control (or edit existing programs) for roughing, finishing, grooving, and chamfering on long shafts.
Set up work holding for long parts, including chucks, collets, steady rests, tailstocks, and follow rests to control deflection on up to 10' lengths.
Select and install appropriate tools, inserts, and holders for alloy steels and superalloys used in turbomachinery bolting.
Optimize feeds, speeds, and depth of cut to achieve required cycle times, surface finishes, and tool life while avoiding chatter and distortion.
Perform first article and in process inspections using micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, and surface finish gages.
Control OD size, taper, concentricity, and runout to tight turbomachinery requirements.
Diagnose and correct common machining issues such as chatter, poor surface finish, tool wear/breakage, and dimensional drift.
Complete production and quality documentation accurately on routers, travelers, and inspection records.
Maintain a clean, safe work area and follow all safety and PPE requirements.
QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
3+ years’ experience as a CNC lathe operator in precision machining, heavy shaft, or turbomachinery components.
Proven experience machining long shafts, studs, or tie rods (parts several feet in length, ideally up to 10').
Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints and understand tolerances and GD&T (runout, concentricity, straightness).
Proficiency with precision inspection tools: OD/ID micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, and surface finish gages.
Experience setting up and using steady rests, tailstocks, and other supports to control deflection on long, slender parts.
Basic G code knowledge and experience editing programs at the control.
Mechanical aptitude and demonstrated troubleshooting skills on CNC lathes.
Preferred Experience
- Background in turbomachinery, power generation, or rotating equipment components.
- Experience machining alloy steels and nickel base or high strength superalloys (e.g., Inconel, MP159).
- Familiarity with ISO/AS9100 or similar quality systems and basic SPC.
- Experience with both 2 axis and multi axis (e.g., live tool) CNC lathes.
REASONING ABILITY
