Position Summary
The Survey Party Chief leads and supervises field survey crews in the performance of construction, engineering, and land surveying activities. This position is responsible for planning, assigning, directing, and reviewing daily survey operations while ensuring accuracy, safety, and compliance with established surveying standards and best practices. The Survey Party Chief must be highly proficient in the use of Trimble equipment, Robotic Total Stations, GPS systems, and other surveying instruments used for construction layout, topographic surveying, and engineering surveys.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Safety and General Responsibilities
- Follow all health, safety, and environmental requirements.
- Recognize, avoid, and report safety hazards.
- Perform cleanup duties and maintain a safe and organized work environment.
- Perform material handling and storage duties.
- Demonstrate knowledge and application of craft-related mathematics.
- Identify, use, maintain, and properly care for common hand and power tools.
- Use and maintain craft-specific tools and equipment.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
Rigging and Equipment Safety
- Demonstrate knowledge and use of safety standards and best practices related to rigging operations.
- Inspect rigging equipment and hardware to ensure safe operation.
- Apply common rigging hitches and techniques.
- Demonstrate knowledge of emergency stop signals and basic crane hand signals.
- Tie and utilize knots, including bowline and clove hitch knots.
- Use rigging equipment appropriate to craft-specific tasks.
Leadership and Crew Management
- Lead, supervise, and take responsibility for the work performed by survey crews.
- Provide lead direction to assigned field survey personnel.
- Plan, assign, direct, and review daily activities of field survey crews.
- Ensure surveying activities are completed accurately, efficiently, and safely.
- Maintain detailed field notes and survey records.
- Oversee care, maintenance, and management of survey equipment.
- Manage and provide direction to field assistants and survey crew members.
- Remain current on surveying practices, guidelines, technologies, and industry best practices.
Surveying and Construction Layout
- Lead survey crews in the layout of:
- Bridges
- Retaining walls
- Pavement grades
- Earthwork grades
- Underground utilities and appurtenances
- Conduct preliminary, location, construction, property, precise, topographic, and other engineering surveys.
- Perform boundary, topographic, construction surveying, and staking activities.
- Lay out curves and establish construction control points.
- Determine volumes and perform calculations used in leveling and mapping.
- Apply surveying methods and procedures within specialized project environments.
- Utilize survey procedures and basic electronic survey data processing techniques.
Survey Equipment Operation
- Demonstrate proficiency with:
- Trimble equipment
- Robotic Total Stations
- GPS systems
- Total stations
- Theodolites
- Lasers
- Transits
- Survey tapes
- Range poles
- Survey rods
- Understand the functional operation, adjustment, setup, and use of all survey instruments.
- Use Trimble equipment and Robotic Total Stations to capture field data and photographic documentation of survey areas.
- Operate and apply all survey equipment and techniques necessary to complete project requirements accurately.

Qualifications
- Proficient in the use of Robotic Total Stations and Trimble surveying equipment.
- Strong knowledge of construction survey layout, staking, grading, and engineering survey procedures.
- Ability to lead and direct field survey crews on complex construction and infrastructure projects.
- Thorough understanding of surveying principles, calculations, mapping, leveling, and volume determination techniques.
- Knowledge of safety standards, rigging procedures, and field operations best practices.
