Position Summary
Bromley Hall is seeking dependable, energetic, and customer-focused Dining Services Associates to join our team. This position assists with food preparation, meal service, sanitation, and general kitchen operations while helping provide an outstanding dining experience for University of Illinois students. Team members prepare quality meals, maintain high standards of food safety, and provide friendly service in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Prepare ingredients for meal production, including washing, peeling, slicing, chopping, and measuring food items.
- Assist with preparing hot and cold menu items according to established recipes and food safety standards.
- Operate kitchen equipment safely, including ovens, grills, mixers, slicers, and other commercial food service equipment.
- Set up, stock, and maintain serving lines before and during meal service.
- Serve residents and guests in a friendly, courteous, and professional manner.
- Monitor food quality, freshness, presentation, and proper temperatures throughout service.
- Clean and sanitize workstations, kitchen equipment, serving areas, dishes, utensils, and food preparation surfaces.
- Properly label, date, rotate, and store food products according to health department regulations.
- Assist with receiving deliveries, stocking inventory, and organizing storage areas.
- Minimize food waste while following proper portioning procedures.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
- Follow all food safety, sanitation, and workplace safety procedures.
- Work collaboratively with kitchen staff, supervisors, and management to ensure efficient meal service.
- Perform additional duties as assigned to support Dining Services operations.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Previous restaurant, cafeteria, hospitality, or commercial kitchen experience is preferred but not required.
- Illinois Food Handler Certification (or ability to obtain shortly after hire).
- Strong work ethic and reliability.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent customer service and communication skills.
- Positive attitude and willingness to work as part of a team.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Must be able to maintain regular and reliable attendance.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in institutional, university, hotel, healthcare, or high-volume food service.
- Experience preparing meals for large groups.
- Familiarity with commercial kitchen equipment.
- ServSafe Food Handler or Food Manager Certification.
Physical Requirements
This position requires the ability to:
- Frequently stand and walk throughout scheduled shifts.
- Occasionally lift and carry up to 40 pounds.
- Bend, stoop, reach, twist, and push/pull carts or equipment.
- Work safely around commercial kitchen equipment.
- Work in refrigerated, freezer, and high-temperature kitchen environments.
- Maintain a high level of cleanliness and personal hygiene consistent with food service standards.
Work Environment
Work is performed in a commercial kitchen where employees may experience:
- Exposure to heat from ovens, grills, and steam.
- Cold temperatures in refrigerators and freezers.
- Wet floors and cleaning chemicals.
- Moderate to high noise levels.
- Fast-paced meal service during breakfast, lunch, and dinner operations.
Schedule
Flexible scheduling is available, including:
- Morning shifts
