Construction Accounting & Payroll Specialist
Job Summary
We are seeking a detail-oriented and dependable Construction Accounting & Payroll Specialist to support the financial operations of our medium-sized construction company. This position is responsible for managing payroll, assisting with accounting functions, and supporting job cost tracking to ensure accurate financial reporting and compliance with applicable regulations. The ideal candidate has experience in construction accounting, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with project managers, field staff, and leadership.
Key Responsibilities
Payroll
- Process weekly payroll for office and field employees
- Accurately track and enter timecards, certified payroll, and prevailing wage rates where applicable
- Ensure proper payroll deductions, taxes, garnishments, and benefit contributions
- Maintain payroll records and respond to employee payroll questions
- Prepare and submit certified payroll reports in compliance with federal, state, and project requirements
Accounting
- Assist with accounts payable and accounts receivable functions
- Enter invoices, verify coding, and route for approval
- Reconcile bank statements, credit cards, and general ledger accounts
- Support month-end and year-end closing processes
- Maintain accurate and organized financial records
Job Costing & Project Support
- Assist with job cost setup, tracking, and maintenance
- Review job cost reports for accuracy and communicate discrepancies
- Support project managers with cost data, labor reports, and documentation
- Help track subcontractor payments, lien waivers, and compliance documentation
Compliance & Administration
- Ensure compliance with company policies, labor laws, and construction-specific regulations
- Maintain employee records, benefit enrollments, and onboarding/offboarding documentation
- Support audits, insurance reporting, and workers’ compensation reporting
- Provide general accounting and administrative support as needed
Required Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience in accounting and payroll, preferably within the construction industry
- Strong understanding of payroll processing, taxes, and labor compliance
- Experience with job costing and construction accounting practices
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting/payroll software
- High level of accuracy, attention to detail, and confidentiality
- Strong organizational and time-management skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with certified payroll, and prevailing wage projects
- Familiarity with construction accounting software (QuickBooks, Foundation, or similar)
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- Experience working with project managers and field operations teams
