Job Summary
The School-Based 1:1 Teacher Aide works under the direction of the classroom teacher and agency supervisor to provide individualized support to a student within the school environment. This position helps promote academic, social, behavioral, and functional success by implementing teacher-directed and agency-provided strategies.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Provide individualized support to one assigned student during the school day in academic, behavioral, and social settings.

Implement teacher- and agency-designed strategies, accommodations, and behavior support plans as directed.

Assist with classroom activities, transitions, and participation to promote inclusion and engagement.

Collect observational data on student performance, behavior, and engagement, as required by the teacher or agency.

Encourage and reinforce positive behaviors and functional communication skills.

Support daily routines such as arrival/dismissal, lunch, specials, and group activities, ensuring student safety at all times.

Promote independence while providing appropriate levels of assistance in academic, functional, or self-care tasks (as directed).

Communicate regularly with the classroom teacher, agency supervisor, and interdisciplinary team members.

Maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality in accordance with school, agency, and state regulations.
Education and/or Work Experience Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent required (NYS minimum standard for teacher aides).

Experience working with children, preferably in a school or childcare setting.

Successful completion of agency-provided Teacher Aide Training Program (required before placement).

Coursework in education, psychology, or related fields a plus.

Bilingual skills a plus.

Physical Requirements of the Role

Must be able to assist students in classrooms, hallways, playgrounds, and other school areas.

Occasionally lifts/moves objects or provides physical assistance to a student (up to 25 lbs).

Constantly positions self to work at student level (e.g., kneeling, bending).

Ability to observe student performance and behaviors and respond promptly.

Ability to communicate clearly with students and staff.
