Job Title: Cashier
Department: Food Services
Job Summary:
This position performs point-of-sale transactions, operates cash registers, and handles customer payments accurately in a cafeteria, delicatessen, or food service environment. Greets patrons, processes cash, credit, and debit transactions, and maintains cleanliness and organization of the checkout counter and cashier station. Performance is evaluated on accuracy of financial transactions, compliance with instructions, customer service skills, and adherence to cash-handling policies.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Operate cash registers, point-of-sale (POS) terminals, and other electronic payment systems accurately and efficiently

Receive payment by cash, check, credit cards, vouchers, or automatic debits

Issue receipts, refunds, credits, or change due to customers

Greet customers, answer questions, provide information on menu items, and assist patrons in a courteous and professional manner

Maintain clean and orderly checkout areas, keeping cash registers and surrounding counters free of debris

Balance cash drawer at the beginning and end of shifts, reconciling cash, receipts, and reports accurately

Assist with food service or dining room support tasks as needed, such as stocking retail items, candies, or beverages near the checkout area

Follow uniform requirements as prescribed in company rules and contract requirements
Required Skills/Abilities:

Proficient written and oral communication skills according to skill requirements

Ability to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals, with strong aptitude for accurate cash handling and counting money

Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs
Education and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent
-
At least two years of related cashier or customer service experience preferred
Physical Requirements:
-
Prolonged period of standing, bending, reaching, and working with hands

Occasional periods of prolonged exposure to loud noises
-
Ability to lift up to 40 pounds at times
- Ability to stand, walk, reach with arms and hands as necessary
- Ability to hear and see to position and safety requirement levels
- Occasional exposure to elements such as heat, cold, noise, dust, dirt, and chemicals
Special Qualifications/Requirements:
Must be able to successfully pass as required a federal, state, or local government's background investigation
