Heavy Duty Mechanic
Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced Heavy Duty Mechanic to maintain, diagnose, and repair a diverse fleet of vehicles and heavy equipment supporting our tree care, site solutions, waste management, and asphalt/concrete operations. This role requires hands-on technical expertise across multiple equipment platforms and the ability to keep our fleet running safely and efficiently in a fast-paced, multi-division environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Diagnose, repair, and maintain heavy trucks, trailers, and equipment including chippers, stump grinders, bucket trucks, grapple trucks, excavators, skid steers, loaders, dump trucks, refuse trucks, pavers, rollers, and concrete mixers
- Perform preventive maintenance including oil changes, fluid checks, filter replacements, and scheduled service intervals
- Diagnose and repair diesel and gas engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, transmissions, brakes, and suspension components
- Troubleshoot and repair hydraulic systems on attachments such as grapples, booms, and lifts
- Perform welding and fabrication repairs as needed
- Conduct DOT inspections and ensure all vehicles meet federal and state safety and compliance standards
- Maintain accurate service records, work orders, and parts inventory documentation
- Respond to roadside or field breakdowns as needed
- Order parts and coordinate with vendors and outside repair shops when specialized work is required
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop environment
- Follow all safety protocols and OSHA regulations
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 3-5 years of verifiable experience as a heavy duty mechanic or diesel technician (REQUIRED — applications without prior heavy equipment/fleet experience will not be considered)
- Demonstrated experience with diesel engine repair, hydraulic systems, and electrical diagnostics
- Experience servicing heavy trucks and at least one category of off-road/construction equipment
- Valid driver’s license; CDL preferred or willingness to obtain
- Own set of hand tools
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, wiring diagrams, and hydraulic schematics
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- Ability to lift up to 75 lbs and work in varying weather conditions
Preferred Qualifications
- ASE certification(s) (Diesel, Heavy Truck, or related)
- DOT inspection certification
- Welding/fabrication experience
- Experience with asphalt/concrete equipment (pavers, rollers, mixers) or waste management fleet (refuse trucks, compactors)
Work Environment
This position involves shop-based and field repair work, exposure to outdoor elements, and occasional after-hours or emergency call-outs for equipment breakdowns.
Pay: $26.00 - $28.00 per hour
